Would you let anyone else ride your horse?

I am going on holiday for a couple of weeks soon... Would you let anyone ride your horse whilst you were away?

Personally, no..... only because my horse is 31 and I am very careful where I ride and the surface etc, depends on if you have someone you can trust.

Otherwise give your horse a holidy too, remember to cut down the feed and start off slowly when you come back. If you have a competition planned on your return then I would say yes if someone is trustworthy let them keep him/her going

Hmm...if they had ridden my horse prior to me going away and I was happy with the way he was ridden/handled etc then I would feel confident going away and leaving that person to ride him :)

No. Absolutely no.

I did it a few years back, and it was someone I thought I could trust. I came back to the yard unexpectedly - and there wa a real comotion to hide the horse from me.

The person had allowed her idiot boyfriend to hack him out with another horse, and they had had a massive altercation. I found my horse beaten up, shaking, wide eyed, sweating and bleeding from a cut on his leg where he had backed through a fence.

I'm a quiet man, not given to getting angry or upset, but I was boiling beyond containment and lost it completely.

But worst of it all was the look in my horses eyes - how could I have allowed that to happen to him? I know now how it feels to betray trust.

No one, apart from my children, rides my horse.

I always let mine just have a rest while im on holiday because i dont like other people riding them and have always been lucky to have laid back horses/ponies that are gratefull for the rest and not the type that have to be ridden everyday to keep them sane!

If your horse is the type to need working to stay sane maybe just ask someone you trust to lunge and hack?

I would allow a couple of my most trusted friends (riders/owners themselves) if they wanted to or had the time to. Other than that I am happy to let others ride whilst I am there, but not when I am not. I would far rather she have a "holiday" too.

Thats awful Brucea, I would hate if anything like that happened to mine :(

Nope, never. I have only ever let people (well, one person!!) ride my horse and that was when i was there and she was a very good rider, much better than me :D

Only if it was my RI or someone who had been regularly riding them prior and you trusted them 100%. That has worked very well for me, they had horse full time when I was away, which meant I didnt get £££ of extra livery fees. But it was someone I would trust completely.

I pay for my horse to be exercised while I am away. He has either had a holiday with my instructor or my best friend who I have know for about 15yrs and I know would look after him.

I pay these people for a service so I think they respect what I wish and ask for. If your horse wont get hot headed without the work then I think a holiday would be nice for them, just depends how long you go for and what your plans are for your return.

Have a lovely holz! :)

no.i dont let anyone ride my horse unsupervised, for the same reasons and past experience as Brucea.

im very happy to let most people ride him when im there, i take pride in the fact that even novice or nervous people can have fun on him.but i would NEVER let anyone ride him when i wasnt there.

Yes, but only very good riders I know well enough, and can handle a horse like her, but treat her well at the same time.

And most likely, I pay them.

When i had two horses I had a regular rider who is a good friend who would ride out with me. I never hesitated to have her ride them when I was away. I can see how people can be wary and I would only let people who know them well ride unsupervised.
