Would you loan him out?

I am going to uni in october and I hightly doubt that I will be taking Ed with me.
By october he will be fit and in work, he is going on 23 and is perfect to handle by anyone, including kids. But isn't always a novice ride. Due to his age should I loan him out as a companion/light hack and school or keep him at home where he won't be worked just in the field.
He has been kept at home for the past 4 years so should I uproute him at his age?
He has been out of work for a year or so before and was perfectly happy staying in his field all day and night. So just wondering should I just have him at home out of work as a companion for his companion or let him be loaned out to be another pony's companion perhaps near my uni?

Just considering my options so I do what is best for him.
 
I guess it depends on a few things, How often you would be able to get home to see him? if you have someone at home how will look after him and his companion while you are away? What you would do with his companion if he moved yards? If you know of anyone suitable who would be interested in having him? Only thing i would suggest is that at his age I would be inclined to try and keep him in light work to keep him supple but wouldnt really want to move him unless I had to, hope that makes sense!

We have semi retired one of ours but she still gets hacked out occasionally by my mum and ridden by our friend but she is quite happy being a pet.
 
i would also semi retire.

but

if you feel he has alot left in him maybe pay for someone to come and ride him for you whilest your away? but keep him at home ?

Not that I know of as there are only a few horses round by me but you never know. He is only 13.1 and would be best with an adult/teen rather than a child as he can be a bit quirky and a bit quick. So might be a bit more difficult finding someone small enough and capable enough to work him.

Well uni is only an hour an a half in good traffic from home so it would just depend on how much uni work and what job I get to how often I go home but as i said it isn't a million miles away.
The companion is looked after by my aunt so her and my parents would keep an eye on him for me and I trust them to make the right decision in regards to him and not me if something were to happen and I was uncontactable which is one main thing I guess. He lives out in a large field all year round so he will get a little exercise when he is turned out I guess. I don't have anyone in mind who would have him so it would be a case of advertising if i decide on loaning.

It is an idea so long as I find someone suitable as I said in the post above he is only 13.1 and i wouldn't class him as completly safe for a child so may be slightly harder due to his height to find someone in my area suitable.
Also if I found someone it would be a question of costs as the reason he may not be going to uni with me is due to finances but it is not an option i woudln't say no to if i got it to work out.
