Here is my scenario:

Option 1 - STAY

Pros of Yard:

* I have an small indoor stables in a barn, but all the hay and straw is in there too, so very dusty.
* I have own field
* Am DIY, so can do what I like.
* Ok hacking ish
*Friendly People
* Free lorry park
* 10 mins from home

Cons
*Hacking limited in winter due to too much mud
*No school

I am considering moving as I get bored just popping round the block and due to work times, I an't lunge as got no school. Also I want to start showing this year, so I can't practice as much as I'd ike as I have to go out in the lorry and hire schools. Also don't know if I like the idea of schooling on hard ground field in summer.

OPTION 2 - GO

There is a new yard opening which is about 20 mins from home. Has some off road hacking, indoor stables with no hay in them and has a school! Don't know prices yet, but DIY is available.

I love being able to be so close to yard from home, but I also would love the convenience of the school.

What would you do?

Personally I prefer to have a school (all weather if possible).

I find that without one riding can be severly limited.

If it was me I would have a quick nip round the yard, check prices. Would probably move though, although dont want to put it down as my definate answer lol. (YOU can tell I am bad at making decisions.!!!)

It’s a difficult decision to make, but putting money to one side it really depends on what you want to do and if you’re present yard is restricting you. From the sound of it you really like the idea of a school. Is it an all weather school and is it lit?

I’ve had experiences of indoors schools which are very dusty, so much so you choke on the stuff and outdoor schools that turn into a swamp in the winter because they are not drained correctly or managed.

So what is the quality of the school would be the main question, but others come to mind like is your horse going to be turned out in the winter months and if so what are the fields like? Again are they managed or just left to get trashed. How many acres per horse are there for grazing and are the paddocks rotated and allowed to rest?

The travel time does not seem that great, what’s an extra 10 minutes? Not a lot, and if you drive kinder to the car than a 10 minute trip.

I hope this helps.

We had our horses close to home (about 5 mins in car) for about 13 years, then moved to another yard for what we thought would be better riding and better facilities (but thats another story), but it was a good 20 minutes away. After about 3 years we moved them back to the original yard and have been back about 3 years. My husband and I both ride and are primarily DIY (but they are done for us 3 mornings a week). We just could not do the extra travelling. I know loads of people keep their horses much further away, but we seem to be slaves to our horses - at the minute I go to the yard about 6am, then about 1ish to get them in, then back about 5 ish to finish off and then they are skipped out again at about 10 (we do one week of this, then YO does the next). I work part time about 15 miles away from home but go past the yard on my way home. We didn't mind the extra travelling to begin with, but it just got so gutty, especially when the weathers not good. Not much help, am I!

At IRC we have a school but are free to ride in the fields, i have been um-ing and ar-ing about leaving, but they look after the horses very well, at the end of the day, thats what my mum looks for when paying livery. School helps immensely in winter XD
