.....be comfortable with a 16.3hh horse in a 10x14 stable?

i am considering moving to my (brilliant!) instructors yard. it really is perfect, except that the stables are tiny! horse is used to a huge foaling size box, but does box size matter really? they're big enough to turn round! he'll have turnout, and exercise 6 days a week so he won't be cooped up and he has no stable vices and isn't fussy, just goes with the flow usually! there is an option if he doesn't cope to move to a bigger box, but it would mean moving liveries that have been there for 20 odd years! is it just me being fussy? or would it be a problem for you too?

Bearing in mind when you visit stoneleigh, they tend to put you in an interesting contraption called a mobile stable that is approx 10x10 wide, whatever the size of horse you have!!

IMO it depends on your horse and if he's not one of the casting types and is fairly space aware I'd say its fine and I'd have no hesitation of putting one of mine in that size - now waiting to be shot down!!

A standard stable size is 12x12 so if you think about it thats the same size just a slightly different shape. As he is quite chilled out I'm sure he would be fine but I'm no expert.

My 15h cob has a 12x10 and I wish it was bigger. You need to be prepared for them to walk over their bedding a lot which makes mucking out worse than it needs to be! I think i use more bedding due to this problem.

He seems quite happy in there and i can squeeze in with a wheelbarrow to muck out before he is turned out if needed. As your horse is laid back you could be fine, but i'd check what reaction the other liveries have to swapping if it doesn't work before you move him.

must admit.....your lucky to get anything bigger than 12 x 12 in most yards..

I am lucky the one I have reserved is 18 x 14 is enormous so I can pretty much choose size of horse lol.

I reckon he'll be ok might have to re adjust slightly and if he doesn't and you can move into a bigger box then great... :)

Sorry but I think that is too small for a 16-3hh. I would be very worried about the horse getting cast. My lad is 17-3hh and in a 20x16 stable. Even Fany who is 14-2hh is in a 16x 14 stable.

Depends on the type of horse really. I have a 16.1 that lived in a 10x10 for four months without problems - but is a sensible type that worked out she couldn't roll. My 16.3, on the other hand, I wouldn't trust in a smaller stable...

What sort of 16.3? Lightweight or a chunk?

I think the build of the horse can make a difference, but 14' is a decent length, horses aren't generally stupid and are pretty aware of their body space, they adapt. 10' isn't that narrow really in the grand scheme of things.

I have a 16.1 Paint who is a big horse, he is quite comfortable in a 10' x 11' stall, no problems at all. I've had an 18h Belgian Draft in the same size stall and she was fine too. 12 x 12 is considered airy where I live.

So, No, I wouldn't have a problem at all, play it by ear though.

I think it really does depend on the horse. If they're good in their stable than I think they're fine. All my stables are only 12 x 10 (not my choice) if I could I'd knock em all down and start all over again I would
.......just short of a few thousand £ though!!! ;)

i've got a 17hh tb who's a skinny minny and he's fine in his stable, he is very chilled though. Also have a 2 16.1's in them and a 17hh. They all manage fine, they are out all day though. I'd hate to keep them in there with no turnout. 3 out the 4 are a pain to muck out though, poo spread everywhere, the other however never ever disturbs a poo!!

I'm sure he'll be fine. As already pointed out, he'll have the same amount of room as a standard stable even if it's a slightly different shape. From what you say, it sounds like he won't be in there for prolonged periods anyway
