so easter day I had the vet out for my horse who had an abscess, she was there less than half an hour, so obviously i have to pay the £35 call out but then they have added Examination out of hours, £65.05 before vat! so my bill is £182!!

does this sound a wee bit expensive to anyone else?

I wouldnt get the vet out for that. Just poultice it myself.
Sadly it sounds correct. Might not be morally correct but thats what holiday call outs are like.

I'm possibly not the right person to reply, we're farmers , hence
Possibly have a different 'account ' with vet. We live 7 miles from surgery. Call out is £20 and thereafter cost is £70 per hour plus drugs obviously. These charges are regardless of when called out, would be same for Monday afternoon, as 4 o'clock Christmas morning! So to me it does seem excessive, but I'm also aware where we are (sw Scotland) does mean our vets are a lot cheaper than down south. :)

Hi, looking at your figures you only mention the callout at £35 and the out of hours at £65, together this is £100 and with the vat at 20% the total is only £120! This I think is fair.

I presume that the other £65 was for drugs, vet wraps etc. That does seem a lot but it depends on what the vet used.

oh i would never not pay it, just seems very high for what they done, colic and choke advice has never been that much! they say that they don't charge extra call outs for out of hours, but guess they get the extra money by charging the advice!

i didn't know he had an abscess, he was just really lame and my mare has never had one in the 11 yrs i've had her, so i had no experience! he is sore and lame again today, so im getting the farrier to come out tomorrow instead

thanks for your advice though!
