In brief:

Out running with my JRT to go and feed my horses and I passed a field entrance with gate open (didnt see gate was open until dogs came out of it or would have avoided obviously) onto a B road albeit a busy one.

As I passed I saw three rotties in the field that started barking at my jack who was on a lead on the other side of the road.

All three dogs came bounding out off the field and began to try and get to my dog.

Owner eventually came out and after much shouting got dogs back. I was thoroughly shaken up by the what ifs though my little jack largely unphased.

I know this woman well enough as it happens though dont know her dogs but.... The what ifs really shook me up.

Not too sure you have anything to report if I'm honest. Were the dogs actually being aggressive or just barking. Rotts are very territorial and mine will bark at anybody walking past our property until I call them back.

As above. They were being territorial, a lot of noise and not much else. There are no what ifs. Dogs being dogs. Next time run on confidently with your boy and ignore them.:)

Interesting question.

It was a friend who suggested a Dog warden or police report based on the off lead public place and danger due to the what ifs rather than the actual. They where out of control for long enough to have caused an accident had there been a car coming/a child with me/I'd had my other dogs with me and therefore no hands free to wave my lead rope with.

If I had been frightened of dogs other than my own this would have been pretty terrifying. Am not vilifying rotties here but they are big and can be shouty. And this was a pack of them and my single dog.

Isnt the point that territorial can be unsafe? There are of course other outcomes that could have ocurred. I did "confidently run on" which is why there was no incident but being terretorial can turn aggressive and on a public busy road is not safe. If I had had my child with me in his buggy and this had happened I would have reported the danger of this as my tiger mummy would have kicked in.

I have three dogs myself and know that to let my "pack" loose on that road would have been irresponsible. I haven't reported the incident for many reasons and was only interested in opinions on other peoples responses to the event rather than a discussion about what happened and why. They ran out barking, because they could, it was somewhat alarming to a seasoned dog owner. :)

No offence at any owner/breed type etc intended.

You say you know the lady who owns them. Might be worth having a word with her and let her know that you felt a little intimidated by them.
Didn't realise that they were actually on the road from you OP. The owner should know better than to let them loose off her property. We have gone to great lenghts to ensure ours cannot get out. 'Fraid it doesn't stop them barking like loons though. I have developed quite a holler myself which, apparently, can be heard at the other end of the village!!

If we go through life occupied by what ifs then not a lot would be achieved. If the what ifs of this scenario concern you then either change your route, report to dog warden, have a sweary session with the owners of the rotties or take out a front page advertisement in your local announcing your displeasure.
