No way. If you have seen a horse with an abscess in its foot, they are in severe pain. I'm sure the pain is similar elsewhere. My TB had an abscess in her cheek - ouch! She was in major pain and took ages to get her from the field with a rope around her neck. Couldn't get headcollar anywhere near.
No way. Horse is probibly lame. Poultice and box rest it. Or get vet out if you have not already done so. Do not under any circumstances ride or exercise the horse.
No definately not. Abscesses are a result of the 'poison' trying to escape the body and I would think aside from pain, the horse would feel pretty icky too.
Bute, poultice, rest, a pick of grass and lots of TLC should do the trick.

The OP did say she was asking because her VET had said it was ok and she thought it was odd. Very responsible of her IMO as many people would take their vet's word for it.
In answer to original question, I wouldn't not ride. Hope horse gets better soon
