Would you risk moving a 30yo horse?

When I moved from Surrey to Ceredigion (5 1/2 hr journey), I was very undecided about moving my oldie as she was about 44 years old but still loving life and reasonably fit and healthy. She had been at our previous place for 20 odd years mainly as a companion. I bit the bullet and moved her. She had not travelled in the previous 20 years but boy she handled it like a pro and walked off at the other end in great shape and spent another 4 years with us in our new home. I’m so glad I brought her with us.

Is there any chance that one of his field mates where he is, possibly another retiree, would be interested in moving with yours? That is the only thing that would concern me a little, leaving all his familiar horses behind, that he might settle better with a familiar equine pal with him?

Unfortunately not. The others are multiple horse owners, and rely on each other for morning feeds, bringing in etc..

I don't see that you have any choice but to try, I would have my prime of life horse on such overcrowded grazing because I think it's asking for trouble. The only other thing you could try is approaching the farmer and asking if he'd rent you - just you - another piece of land.

We only have two fields, summer and winter. The winter already has a bit sectioned off for an aggressive rig. Another tick for moving....
 
We have recently moved my mums 25 year old horse from Sussex to my friends in Herefordshire to retire.

She’s an anxious horse, but she quickly settled and appears to be happier than ever.

I think provided you can move somewhere the horse can stay put, and you’re confident of that - that’s key.
