Would you sell a van to buy a 4x4 and trailer?

I have a lovely little 3.5ton van. Very smart, easy to drive and has a small living. Only problem is that it only takes one horse safely for its weight capacity (although I'm sure plenty of nutters would drive it with two in) and it's only got the head room for up to about 15.2hh.

Thinking of selling and buying a 4x4 and a trailer. I would think my van is worth £5-6k but not sure if this would buy me something reliable? I drive a very long distance for work so it would be an extra car rather than a replacement for my normal car. On the plus side, I don't mind how tatty it looks provided bits aren't dropping off and its not going to need loads of maintenance.
 
I'm thinking about going the other way at the moment. I've got a Daihatsu Fourtrak (R reg) and a Bateson Ascot trailer, but I'm not going to be competing for the next year or so, so I'm thinking about selling them both, buying a cheap run around and then getting a lorry when I'm back in action. I think my trailer is worth £3k, and I think my 4X4 probably isn't worth more than about £3k (total guestimation!), so yes it should be possible for you to get an older 4x4 and a trailer for your budget.

I'm still not sure whether to sell mine or not, because the 4x4 has been invaluable in the snow and I love the trailer and it doesn't really cost me anything to keep, so I might keep them both. Decisions, decisions...
 
You should be able to get a decent trailer for £2500 and I paid £2900 for my terrano 2001 swb about a year ago. The only problem might be your running costs, mine is definately more economical than the shogun and discovery I have had but its still not cheap
 
NO NEVER!! I might sell the van and buy a bigger lorry though

You would notice a huge amount of difference in you fuel consumption to work too.

I was only traveling around 30 miles a day and swapped to a small car, the difference in cost between fuel and insurance paid for the lorry insurance and running costs. Not too mention I couldn't cope without having a living area anymore
