Some people on my yard have advertised their pony and have had interest from people from Jersey. Videos have been sent and the people have stated they want to buy him and will arrange for vetting and transport etc. Do you think this is dodgy and would you ever sell one of yours this way? I personally would want to vet the people!

if u cant be arsed to make the effort to come see the horse then i wudnt be arsed to make the effort to send him/her to you! :)

Plus if ur a psyco I wanna know about it!
 
sorry, gonna buck the trend here, but I'd consider it.

If you live somewhere like Jersey it would be very hard to view lots of horses.

I would probably ask for references from PC instructors or something, but as long as it's vetted and the money is in my account before pony left the yard, then I would probably do it.

Once you've sold a horse it is totally out of your hands.
 
No, I'd never sell under those circumstances. I don't think meeting the prospective purchaser guarantees a good long term home for your horse but I still wouldn't do it. It feels wrong!

Have bought a horse that way though!
 
I would. I dont see there is a problem with it? If they have talked over the phone and if videos have been sent and they buyers are happy with what they have seen then why not? I almost bought a horse that way once.
 
Friend of mine lives in the Scottish Highlands - she bought a horse off a video from people in Cheshire She was very limited with regards to time available to travel - part time job, 2 kids a husband and a livery yard at home. She was also struggling to find any suitable local horses to buy

He is an absolute saint - everything as described - and she is a perfect home for him. She took as much a risk buying him without sitting on him as the people did selling him.

If you buy a horse from a sale, you rarely meet the vendor and they have no chance to vet your suitability for their horse. You also don't get to sit on the horse either - at some point in the buying/selling process there has to be an element of trust.

Just because you've met the buyer and they seem nice and like your horse, doesn't mean they aren't going to sell him on or fail to look after him - or do any of a multitude of dreadful things.

I would not assume it was dodgy actually. Especially if they are organising vettings. That doesnt really happen with scammers.
 
No I wouldn't but then I wouldn't sell my horse!

I can see why some would though in certain circumstances, but as a rule I wouldn't go along with it.

Can imagine somewhere like Jersey would be very difficult to view horses from.

Once you put a horse up for sale, I think you lose a lot of the control over what happens to it. Yes ultimately you could choose not to sell it or find "the perfect" home, but theres never any guarentee.
 
When horses/ponies are being sold, for whatever the reason - in general the animals are advertised via local papers or the internet as we now have. So it's very much a lottery really as to who approaches you....

Through no fault of his own - I had to sell my RID - Therefore I advertised and I was approached. I asked all the appropriate questions - even went to view the new place, all seemed well so I sold my boy VERY cheaply to a new home for life, although I did my very best to secure a permanent home for him - he was sold on... I was gutted - but as a human I can only take what people say at the time.

The OP asked "Would you sell your horse to people you had never met?" Unless your horse/pony is sold locally - there ain't no way of knowing..... It's a hard one but personally I would not trust anyone again.
 
No, but I'm very sentimental about my horses so I would need to see the rider, meet the people to make sure I got the right vibe from them etc. Basically to know I'd done everything I possibly good to make sure they got that perfect home.

At the same time, if the story checks out, I can understand why some people would decide to do so. I think it depends on the type of person you are. Some get very sentimental like myself, whilst others can take a more clinical/businesslike approach to selling.

As has been said, Jersey isnt exactly the easiest place to get to and from.

My friend bought a brood mare via videos and phonecalls.

After all, once you have sold them, you have no control over what happens.
And, scammers are called scammers for a reason. They have an ability to scam!
Come across and wonderful generous animal friendly people to your face.........then scam you!
