have had to put up my call out due to diesel costs?
I really dont want to have to do this but I have worked out that when I go back to work in a week (after broked ankle), I will be paying around £125+ on diesel

At the mo, I charge:
- £5 call out for up to 15 mile (making it 30 mile round trip) radius of home or previous visit.
- £10 for 25+ (50 round trip)
- £15 for 40+ (80 round trip)
- £20 for 50

No I always try to book several clients into the same area to keep call out down and I was chatting to a vet the other day who said they charge £1.20 per mile.
Diesel is hitting us all badly

I will be telling all my clients when they call.

Would you be annoyed at this?

Wouldn't annoy me - but then I understand the problem as OH is a farrier and facing a similar situation with diesel costs, although I suspect dentists cover an even wider area so the problem is worse for them.

no every thing is going up you can't be out of pocket. if i live with in 5 miles and you came out and did a basic rasp how much would it cost? just out of interest

Funnily enough was having this sort of discussion last night regarding call out charges from the vet. And how if mileage is charged per mile it can be steep.

I'd rather it went on your professional fees personally. So whilst I would still be paying more for your service, could probably stomach it a bit better if it were for professional services rather than petrol.

ok,
28jen28, usually if it is just down the road, less than 5 miles I dont charge call out.
I know vets charge for their time taken travelling (i dont do this) rather than cover their diesel costs for that particular trip.

Same, although at our place we keep costs like this down by all having the dentist at the same time twice a year and sharing the callout charge. Do you or could you offer some kind of group discount as an incentive? If everyone in the local area could travel to one venue on a certain day it'd mean you wouldn't have to drive anywhere else.

No not at all, tis a sign of the times I'm 'fraid. I work at a school, and we have had a couple of teachers leave because they have to find more local jobs, all down to the cost of petrol!!

Yes I do offer group incentive discounts etc:
-4 or more horses on the same yard = £5 discount on dentistry per horse
-6 or more is £8 discount per horse
-10 or more is £10 discount per horse.

This then works out beneficial to both me and my clients.

I think if people know in advance they can't really be annoyed because they then have the choice to go elsewhere or put up with it. I couldn't believe diesel prices last night. Everytime I've needed to fill up recently my husband has paid for my diesel as I have never had my wallet on me so I hadn't noticed how quickly it has risen. I remember when it hardly rose from month to month, now it's week to week.

No I wouldn't, everyone is in the same boat I'm afraid and I have sympathy with all those who need to drive as part of their job. I actually think your call-out fees are very reasonable compared to what I pay for our Vet to come just down the road!

Quite honestly, I would expect it at some point, but I would appreciate being told prior to your arrival (at booking).

I would totally understand.

Was having a similar conversation about haylage/haymaking costs only yesterday. The price of diesel is going to put up the price of making and transporting. We cant expect people to continue to absorb these costs.

I think we will find a lots of professionals call out prices being hiked up very shortly. My OH is self employed and soon he will have to up his price/hour at the rate diesel if going.

Trouble is it could limit your field of clients for those who are a bit far away!
