Would you think it rude if .....

Having recently moved to a new area, I am on the search for grazing.

Now for those of you who do own land - would you consider it rude if somebody put a flyer in your letterbox looking for grazing??

I have obv. exhausted all other routes and this is almost my last hope.

we had someone come round last summer and ask for grazing, she was very rude, a note in the letter box is a good idea

No I wouldnt personally think it was rude. Just desperate!!!!!

Still definitely worth a try. My friend bought a fab house this way. If you dont ask....as they say. My current livery stopped and asked me in the road if I knew of anyone who had space. I had had enough of DIY liveries ( always end up doing it yourself) but she asked and I succumbed. Glad I did. Lovely girl. So it doesnt hurt to ask.

I am desparate!!!! in a catch 22 situation with grazing at the moment, and its doing my head in.

Yes, get on with it...no problem with that. I asked a farmer who I knew had a field spare and whilst it took some 'negotiation' because we were 'incomers' I have been renting 2 and a half acres for 3 years now!

No...not at all. BUT when what youve got is very limited and precious to you, sharing it with someone who you dont know is a big risk.

Id offer your help around first so that your "target" gets to see how conscientious you are first.

Having lent a box to a complete stranger a few years back who had no respect for my yard, I'd never do it again.

They are Old ENGLISH (not irish

) mastiffs. Very big, lazy and very slobbery!!!!! ( you need a constant supply of magnolia paint!!!) And dont need too many walks- dont like them as its just tooooo energetic!! But very lovely so long as you are not a postman or Jehovahs Witness. We eat them- complete with briefcase!!!

Thanks for the help guys, I am only looking for grazing, have my own stables and small arena, so just need a let on a field. I'll have to get printing now, and go for a nice hack in the morning and post some flyers.

A few years ago I was looking for grazing so I knocked on the door of a local farmer and asked nicely if he had a field I could rent and a few days later I moved my horse there. A few months down the line they decided to set up a proper livery yard

Have spoken to local farmer, he has given me the use of a very small and not very secure field across the road. I only use it at weekends when I am around as there are three gates to it, the first has a padlock, the second has nothing, and the third has a piece of bailing twine on it, it opens out onto a busy road.

Plus my TB gets stressed if he is out on his own and works himself into a sweat, so I need a larger, more secure field so I can get a companion for him.

oh the drama looking for some grass!!!!

I wouldn't think it was rude if I owned a yard - after all we should all know it must be awful to be horse-homeless!

Just be really polite and the chances are someone will jump at the chance - you never know there might be someone just dying for some company out there!

I did - recently moved to a new area & while I didn't flier I did some research and made some phone calls (all to no great joy by the way), ended up buying small plot behind house from farmer to build stables on & last week called in next door who has an empty similar sized paddock behind his house - he's giving it to me for nothing & will still be able to see ponio out my bedroom window!

I would put more of a polite letter than a flyer. We have had people come and ask about grazing and when we have said "no", they have become very rude

. A polite letter would get you much further. Also put some notices up in your local tack shops - word of mouth usually works wonders.
