i really want to go hunting on saturday and ive got the box, but not a tow car. :( i am debating wether to tow with my passat estate which i think will pull it a 505, no problem . I wont get into a habit of towing everyweek with my horse but maybe once in a blue moon. The hunt is near to where i keep my horse but not so near that i can hack to :( However there is alot of very steep hills and this is my worry.( i live in south wales) What would you do ?
 
You CAN tow with an estate car, I've done it with both a 2litre and a 2.5litre subaru legacy. Admittedly I was towing a pony trailer with one pony in, but it was legal and I had this confirmed by my towing instructor as I thought I needed the test (but didn't) so booked lessons.
You just need to know the max laden weight of your trailer, and the max towing capacity of your car.

ETA: Bizzarly I found that the length of the legacy meant that I found it more stable to tow with than my Disco even though the Disco had the better pulling power!
 
Who me? I weigh 60kg, my ponies weigh 500kg max, my box weighs 600kg unladen (and yes I've weighed it). I never carried more than one haynet - 6kg and a small water container 20kg, by my reckoning that is 1186kg and my legacy's MTC was 1400kg so I was well within my limits.

Please do not forget the 85% rule
Weight of Your trailer plus horse should not exceed 85% of unladen kerb weight of car.

Many cars will tow their own weight no problem but they might not stop when road conditions are less than perfect!!

I have been jack-knifed into by an overweight trailer which overtook the tow car when the driver braked going downhill.

Please take care you will NEVER forgive yourself if your horse was hurt and you later realised it was your fault.
