Would you turn this horse out with others?

Just wondering what peoples opinions were on this as I would like Owen to have a old pony or something to keep him company in the field as he has started jumping out of the field to get to other horses on a regular basis even though he is crippled at mo! So would like to have an old pony or something to keep him company but when he was last turned out with some ponies last winter, he had this stupid obsession with trying to eat their necks!...and do not want to risk ending up with a pony that has a damaged/mauled neck!

He just loves to sink its teeth into the neck of whoever he may be talking to. He just opens his jaws and fixes his mouth onto the crest of the neck,as hard as possible, and stays there for about 30 secs or so, and the poor victim is rather helpess and cannot get away until he lets go.....the skin is never marked,and nothing ever seemed to be hurt, or harmed, but definately worried. It is not done in a menancing,evil way, just a playfull way, but obviously a bit too playfull though. But he just does it as a matter of course he is not trying to be evil or anything.
He would never kick or charge at another horse, he is totally sweet and means well but just does not appreciate how hard he can bite a neck crest and has a bit of a fixation about biting necks unfortunately !

So what do you think, turn out with another,it wont do them any harm although it looks bad

,or a big no-no? Sorry I guess I am asking a totally dumb question

Why not get him another animal companion that he cant eat LOL.

What about a goat or a pig?

Turn him out with a pony. If he doesn't hurt it there isn't a problem IMO. Its not like he is nasty to them.
Some may complain, is he on a livery yard? Though its your own horse so stuff the others.

Just out of interest does he windsuck or crib?? i used to know a pony that windsucked...but only on another ponies neck!!!
i wouldn't be too worried about turning out with him...if a pony is that bothered they'll be fairly quick about telling him where to go! especially an older one that knows its place!

I cannot believe your luck inthe fact that you ares till having problems with Owen, what is going on with him now and why is he crippled? That is a very good question about the turnout but think that you are the only person really who has the answer. Can you not make your fencing higher?? The answer depends on the nature of the pony as obviously you wouldnt want it to get hurt and also you dont want Owen getting anymore injuries. Is there not a bigger companion that you could put him out with??

LMAO, little man used to do something similar. There was a big cob in the field and little man (all 11.1hh of him) would hang onto his neck. It started to worry and embarrass me. But he was only a baby so it was just him playing. I pray he didnt do any harm

But yes, i wopuld have no probs turning a horse out with another who bit. At the end of the day it's what they do in the wild.
Perhaps look for a youngster who will give as good as it gets

lol! sounds like mine, he has been known to pick up a shetland by its neck and shake it! funnily enough he isnt allowed out with ponies anymore

Maybe a small pony with a bit of guts? i know he has been injured and you dont want that happening again but what about finding a pony that will not be afraid to turn round and chase him off? so he learns that this isnt an 'allowed behaviour' within his herd? Just a suggestion

I agree with Live wire - get a pony that wont take messing, that way then you have the best of both worlds!

And hopefully a pony WITHOUT a crick in his neck lol

put him out with Blossy - they'd have a lovely time, she does exactly the same thing as him - they could hang off each others necks!!!!!!!

Sorry, not a very sensible solution tho!

I cant put Bloss out with other horses for this reason, but im lucky in that shes to lasy to ever jump out of her field.......

My horse used to have a whale of a time playing with a Shetland that used to be at our yard- he would pull him backwards by the tail and when he let go the shetty would "ping" forward at a great speed!
My other horse is a windsucker and when he's too lazy to walk to the fence the nearest pony back will do!
