id buy looks are last on my list
safety first lol !!!
my daughters mare is a real ugly pony (bless her )
but does her job with flying colours.
but if id gone on looks id have left her at her old home !!!!!

If it was what I wanted in every other way then yes, without a doubt. No point buying a nice looking horse if it doesn't do the job. And as you said, could just be a naff photo!

I only would buy a horse if it felt right. I tend to have good intuition when it coems to buying horses (for me anyway) so far I have had very good results! one however was stunning and on paper was fantastic BUT I just didn't get a feel for him at all. However, stupidly I listened to other peple's advice and we bought him. BIG mistake! he was never going to be what i wanted (he's far too neurotic). 14yars later though i still have him (he's 21 now) as we didn't have the heart to sell him as knew he'd end up getting passed around!!!

Looks don't matter to me - if I like the horse I like it. I am actually ore put off by these perfectly put together, well bred horses (like the one I mentioned above). They seem to end up being total loonies or really dim and accident prone!! O'll stick with my native crosses anyday!

Oh and as per crazypony's post, I feel the 'ugly' ones seem to be the most sensible, try hardest types too. Wonder why?!

When I was looking to buy a new horse to replace the one that was too small, my riding instructor said to me after riding a little TB mare 'Don't look at its conformation, did you get on with her? Did you like the ride she gave you?' I now own that little mare and she is a great horse for me but it does depend what you want to do with the horse.

Very novice nervous friend has got what is possibly the most ugly horse in the world ( seriously!!) but he is worth his weight in gold and gradually the more i have got to know him the more you look past his looks, he is a real cut and shut job has the front end of a shire the head of 19hh rhino and the rest of him is 13.2, he has piggy eyes and is a grumpy little thing but under saddle is always foot perfect.
You never know it might look better in real life but my answer is ignore the looks ride it then make a decision.
good luck

I find that a pleasing-looking horse, who is well balanced and has no disproportionate features, generally looks this way because it has good conformation and so for that reason am drawn towards more attractive horses. That said, if it does its job well, looks don't come into it at all. Handsome is as handsome does

...saying that, I suppose it depends what makes the horse a 'minger'. An ugly head is fine, but more severe conformation faults might affect a horse's way of going in later life and encourage things like arthritis, tendon issues etc.

As I have a very good looking one who is tricky I wouldn't worry about looks next time, the only thing I would consider looks for though is if I wanted to sell it on.

I would, plus pictures sometimes can be misleading, I have just bought a horse that in the pictures looked like a donkey, I was pleasantly surprised when i got there as not only did he have all the boxes ticked he was actually lovely looking too! But even if he had looked like a donkey I would definitely have bought him as a safe, kind horse is worth more to me than a beautiful sharp one that you can't ride!!

Nope. If it was perfect for me in every way except cosmetically then I'd buy it. PROVIDING the ugliness isn't to do with conformational faults which could encourage problems later in life/doing the job you want it for.

Good luck. You may just come home with him

its sounds worth a look definitely, beauty is in the eye of the beholder dear! and if this horse is healthy, honest and genuine and you're going to have fun with him/her then looks don't matter! best of luck with your decision

yes I think I would prefer one where I would be safe, enjoy it, rather that a Brad Pitt of the horsey world who would try and kill me at some point/didnt get on with

even stunning in the flesh horses can take a stinking picture

don't write it off till you see it, and then if it does the job allow it some room for less than 100% looks

handsome is as handsome does is so true

I would so long as its conformation was ok, if it was that right for me I would fall in love anyway. George probably looks and me and thinks 'how did I get her?!!!'

I'd go and look - I have bought a pony for my daughter which I hated at first sight. So glad I did buy her though!

Also I have taken some seriously stinky pictures of our very nice pony.

Glad you are going for a look

Yes but I like showing so a horse that would do what I wanted would have to be a bit attractive. If I didn't like showing then yes definately.
