I have a yearling colt and a 6 month old filly so my question is would you turn them out together? I have been told that my colt will "worry" the filly but I cant see it myself as she isn't of breeding age, wont have seasons yet and has come from a big herd so should be able to stick up for herself! the only other option is to turn her out with my mare but I would have to leave her alone when I go riding, which obviously I dont want to do.

I have 2 yearling colts living with all of my fillies and a few mares. They are at the very bottom of the pecking order, as is usual with colts raised in herds with dominant mares. My yearlings were all born in April through June last year; the colts were born in June so are a little younger than the fillies. I've never had any trouble with keeping colts (under 2) with mares or fillies, however you do have to be aware that accidents can happen (although highly unlikely with your filly right now). My boys are being gelded next month, just because I want them done before they are too big and not because either of them are randy, because they aren't, they're very respectful.

Thanks Tia, he will be being gelded and they will definately live together then, but Filly is just weaned and coming to me tomorrow so I am just trying to sort out fields etc. It would make my life so much easier if they could go in together but there are 2 ladies down the road who are insistant that it wont work and he will worry her. She is quite a confident filly and big for her age will grow to approx 16.2hh.

Doubtful in my experience. Colts tend to be much quieter than fillies who are often very quick to show their dominance over them. As I say, I've done it for years and never had any problems arise. Good luck with your filly! I bet you are very excited.
