Would you turn out for the winter when said pony has wintered in for the last 10 yrs. He is now 20 yrs old and a Highland x TB with the emphasis on Highland, coat like a yak.

Would I be cruel? I don't think I over rug and only give a cursory groom to remove mud and a good check over so has nice greasy coat.

We did with our arab x connie when she was 21 and no longer worked. She always prefered to be out than in, and often lived out in the summer months.
The only thing we did was turn her out full time at the end of spring so she had the whole summer and autumn to aclimatise(sp). She is like a polar bear and does well, she is 27 now and still out full time. She is also much less stiff living this way. She has ad lib haylage when the grass runs out and has some chaff and a balancer. So she is cheap to run too!

Yes, I have a stable, and he is healthy, runs to fat if not on a diet. Hay not a problem and he usually has a high fibre diet and cider vinegar. Very tempted to give it a go. Other livery, there are only two of us, has show pony and rugs up all year and washes it to within an inch of it's life so will not understand, which puts me off as if I am neglecting my boy. I must grow a pair!!!!

Mine used to live out for a month over Christmas and he was fully clipped. Just used to rug and make sure he had enough shelter and adlib hay and he was fine. Think he used to enjoy the break from being stabled at night

Yes, my oldie (native) has been in over winter last few years through being on livery. If I had space of my own she would stay out all year (barring the really horrific weather) - she has a rug that covers her from ears to knees and is happier out as long as there's food.
