Would you?

cos it p******s me off they have no manners, i have always thanked drivers since i was old enough to ride on the roads.
All it takes is one driver to decide they have had enough and stop slowing down for horses and that one driver will no doubt encounter a young horse and frighten it or worse.
Manners cost nothing!

the other day a lorry driver didnt slow down at all and he had a massive black rattly cage on the back and was coming towards me hell for leather. my horse wa petrified(she is usually fine with lorries) and fell onto the verge. i was terrified and even worse her leg started going into spasms!!! but i called a friend to help and we walked her round and it took 10 mins and then it was fine....BUT it was very scary.

The only problem with thanking a driver that i find is having a young horse on the road I don't like to take my hands off the reins because she can be spooky..

So if i thanked every driver, my chances of coming off if she were to spook mid wave would be greater, therefore i thank every other driver and not all. I normally just nod my head to the ones coming towards me.

Maybe thats why they didn't thank you?

i'd have a word yes! Even if you can't take your hands off the reins you could incline or nod your head. or smile........ just show some gratitude. there's no excuse for it unless ur horse is dancing/rearing/bucking

Don't think it was a young horse issue in fact if the 4 ponies concerned had a combined age of less than 100 i would be very surprised

The thing is this has happened more than once just wanted to see what everyone else thought.
Ignorant young hackers beware!

Yes! It worked too! Next time I saw them a few days later, I was a passenger in a different car and they waved and smiled like I told them too. I was so chuffed, I got it stopped and jumped out and thanked them! Mind you, their faces were a picture, they thought they were in for another rollocking again!!

Also to add if someone doesn't thank a driver (a nod and a smile are enough if you really can't take your hands off the reins) the next person riding they come across could well be a child and they will just see 'ignorant rider again, sod them' and could leave carnage behind; that doesn't bear thinking about.

I can't take my hands of the reins due to my sensitive tb but I find even making eye contact and giving a nod seems to do the trick.

There are enough inconsiderate drivers out there without making more by being discourteous to those who do bother slowing down.

I have stopped and spoken to kids before when they have no hi-viz on and its getting dusking. I didn;t have a go at them at all just said that I did not see them until the last minute (I hadn't but only because I'm always on the look out for horses) as their bay horses and their dark clothes blended into the trees and shadows. I told them I had some spare hi-viz if they wanted any. Next time I saw them they had hi-viz on

no, although manners cost nothing and I always thank drivers who slow down, I don't mind in the least if riders don't thank me for slowing down. I don't slow down because I want to be thanked, I slow down because its the right thing to do
