So 4 weeks ago Elvis, in his quest to be a field ornament at the age of 7, decided that having 4 legs was over rated and tried to remove his front near leg at the fetlock joint by wrapping it up in electric fencing after having jumped out of his field. He managed to sever an artery and remove about an inch and a half of flesh and leave the rest in a pretty mangled state. He was in a cast for 10 days and has since had bandaging with Manuka honey and been on box rest. He had a couple of hours turnout today, which despite being lightly sedated was very exciting and he couldn't help having a little hoon about. Thankfully his carefully chosen field partner, looked on apparently disgusted with Elvis' immature behaviour, so Elvis settled quickly.

Photo is from today, after his turnout, last change was Friday, and he now only has to wear a bandage for turnout, it'll be a little while until he can start exercise. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the original wound as I was more worried about stopping the blood from his fetlock. But you can see the pink flesh is fresh skin, which originally was open wound, it's amazing how quickly it has healed.

Sorry for the long, and probably boring post, I'm just chuffed with the healing. It's amazing to think he never went lame with it though.

Yes very lucky he didn't damage any tendons and that the wound wasn't deeper. Although he did give me a big scare when I found him lying down, with blood on his face and all 4 hooves, turned out he'd try to clean it up himself. Thankfully we are now past the proud flesh risk so no need for shaving as I was really not looking forward to that.
