About a month ago my 5 year old gelding got a cut on his forehead, about where a brow band on a bridle would sit. It was not very deep and was healing up nicely but because of the itch he opened it back up again. Now it is much deeper and all swollen again. I might get a vet out to see if we need stitches. Anything I can do to prevent the itch so he will let it heal this time? The wound is still open, I'm willing to do almost anything to get this thing to heal.

I suspect you need antibiotics, it is beyond stitching at this stage but may either have some infection that is causing him to rub or a foreign body in it, a month is a long while to leave without getting the vet, as it not healing properly really do require a vet to look at it.

I think you should get the vet, sounds like its infected to me! They will also give you fast healing wound cream which will encourage it to heal quicker

Agree with manuka honey. Once you know it is definitely not infected try calendular (marigold) oil as it knits wounds really quickly and if you add a few drops of rosemary it helps the hair grow back. Also derma gel is great as it heals from the inside out.
