Ok, so I posted last week about horsies going lame on a hack. Must have stood o something.
Now he is pretty much sound, I think, in a straight line and on a circle. A coupel of days ago clear/yellowish fluid was oozing out and a yellow stain was left on the poultice (a small one). So this seems to have dried out and I had the farrier out today who says the foot is still 'wet'?? but no foriegn body or pus there. Said no more wet poulticing, a dry one on tonight. No mention of riding/when to stop poulticing so was wondering if anyone could help?
Saddler is coming tomorrow so may need to sit on him. It didn't help that his brand new hoof boot (at 47 quid!) was shredded this morning, one week after being purchased! Which meant any dirt will have got in overnight...
Hope this isn't too confusing!

ETS:farrier dug a little so there is a small hole and a small crack. (hard to explain!) A pea would fit in it?

When ours had an abscess the farrier said that we should stop packing the drain after a few days as the hoof grows back so if it's stopped oozing it'll be alright to ride, just be careful of the ground. I would also suggest returning the boot for a refund as it should have lasted better than that, after all they sell them to put on horses hooves.

This has happened to Flo a couple of times, but we haven't used a hoof boot to poultice. The best thing is either horsehage bag (reinforced on the toe/sole with gaffer tape) or black silage wrap. Gaffer tape used round the horse's pastern to keep the plastic on, and can be reused if not worn, or replaced as necessary. I wouldn't ride in a sand school though tomorrow when the saddler comes, can you ride in the field instead, as you really don't want sand to get into the crack. Flo had hers during the winter, so I had to stick to hacking for 2 weeks, until the hoof had healed sufficiently.

PS - who is the saddler?? I would like a new one for Flo, but the one I would like to fit it doesn't keep much stock, and those who keep lots aren't qual to fit. PM if you prefer.

First time using it, had it bandaged and all inside, this was just to protect it further..don't think I can take it back, it did say limit movement if possible and they really went for it this morning, galloping round like loonies so...;p
I can ride in the field instead, glad to hear some positive thoughts, am dreading leaving him off too long as our first novice is in two weeks. SO if he's sound I should be ok to ride? (will obviously be seeing whats on the dry poultice tomorrow).
This is when being on your own yard is not so beneficiary!

As long as he's sound you will be fine. Just ride anywhere but a sand school. Have been through it twice with Flo, so unfortunately a bit of an expert. Fingers crossed there is nothing on the poultice tomorrow. Helps that the fields are all dry at the moment I suppose.
Good luck for first Nov, is it Tullymurray. Hope your boy is good at jumping into water, as the N's go in off that drawbridge thingie (or they did last year anyway).

IT does, we have plenty of hacking etc, so no bother there.
Yup, tullymurry, v. nervous and need to get him out next weekend SJ.
Yes, I beleive there was a long route though? Have stood at the top of it and it's bloody scary!
He's brill, he knows what he's doing, just hope I stay on.
Did I see you entered for rademon on sunday?

Yes we are entered for Sunday, but thinking the ground will be a trifle firm for Flo, so taking the old boy for a spin instead. He hunts and has evented, so 75cm will be a bit of an insult, but we'll have fun anyway.
Hadn't realised that there was an alternative to that water, hope there is, and that you have a good run.
