I’ve bought some wrapped hay for the first time. Seems to be good quality but having opened it a week ago, I’m now finding a few small white patches in the areas where the hay falls open into slices. I’m wondering whether it’s not had enough air flow. Should I have opened it up more to let the air through? They’re big square bales so I expect a bale will last me about 10 days. I’ve got them in a barn so they’re not under a tarp once opened but it did seem to get a little damp after opening which made me wonder if it’s sweating

Open up and spread out as much as you can and ideally store on a pallet so the air can flow underneath.
Wrapped bales when being stored need to be protected from birds, cats and any other critter that will be tempted to put holes in the wrapping. So cover with netting.
I personally wouldn’t worry about the odd white patch, just pull it out and chuck it away.
