Writing to his breeder!

I know this topic crops up a lot, so sorry to repeat it, couldn't find an old one! I'm considering writing to the breeder in my horse's passport - is this a really silly idea? On the one hand they may be churning them out and not care a jot for some British girl who's got one of 'em - but equally perhaps this was their first foal and they're tormented daily wondering what happened to him!

Or, perhaps, somewhere in the middle :D

Bearing in mind she could be anywhere on that scale, what would be a reasonable thing to write? Ideally I'd like to send her 200 photos, shout I LOVE HIM and CAN I HAS FOAL PICTURES?!?! but I realise this may not be the best approach ;) So I was thinking just a brief update about where he is, what he's doing, and perhaps one picture as a reminder (he has quite distinctive markings).

Anything else? If it was you what would you want, or not want to hear? Does it matter if it's handwritten or am I overthinking it?! Really nervous about the idea for some reason.
 
Way over thinking just go for it what's worst that can happen u hear nothing so go for it. I think anyone that bred a horse first second or three hundreth should be.pleased to know how its doing just for for.it. Oh and posting one or two of the 200 photos sent back.is a must if it happens lol
 
Great, I hope she has the same attitude as you guys! I just worry that she won't - but you're right, nothing lost if that's the case! I think I'd die if I had baby photos of him, that would be amazing :D But it would be nice to know anything of his background. He's only had one owner before me who took him when he was imported, so it's the missing piece :)
 
I would always love to know. I know one breeder who has bred far more foals than me who is currently trying to find out where one of her boys is. Would be far better for people to let us know. One thing..they may have moved from the address you have so if you don't hear you may think they don't care. Is it a well known breedet?
 
I have no idea! Not very good at these things. I'll see what google says if I have the passport by the comp any time soon (can never remember the name!). It did occur to me that she might have moved, but it's just 6 years so chances are lower than they might be :) Reassuring that so many breeders are still interested in their babas! :D
 
We got in touch with Spud's breeder, made a very good friend out of it (she was delighted as Spud had fallen on hard times and she'd been worried sick about him), and now have his baby brother too..... It was nice to know that Spud had started off right too.

Responsible breeders do like to know that their 'kids' are OK.

Oh and let us know how you get on and if you get those foal photos we will of course need to see them :)
 
I'd try and find her online first. These days folk are far more likely to reply to an email than a letter.

I am or have been in touch with 3/4 of the breeders of mine, two are friends on FB now. I haven't contacted Titchy's breeder as they aren't online but I could if I wanted to.

Kyle's breeder wanted him back if I ever sold him which is nice to know that, for a racehorse breeder, he really does care about his stock.

Jeff's was lovely and sent me a mountain of pics of him, mother and siblings.

Gray's never got back to me. And neither did Laurels.
 
Definitely try, most breeders are keen to hear how horses are getting on. I'm in touch with all bar one of ours and would be keen to hear how he is getting on (Chamfron Nagasha, grey sports horse, if anyone has him!!)
 
I've thinking about this myself for a while now but just have not got round to it. I tried googleing them but absolutely nothing. My mare is from Ireland to at least they speak the same language! You might have just spurred me into action!
 
I was in contact with the Dutch breeder of my Friesian as I bought her directly from him at weaning - sent photos every year.

I have tried to contact both breeders and trainers of ex-racehorse but never got a response. They have so many horses I guess they don't really remember which one is which (unless they are the good ones!)

Go for it - what have you got to lose?
 
I would see if you can get an e-mail address then they'll either respond or not. I recently contacted the stud who have the stallion that sired my filly, I just introduced myself and told them I had a filly by their stallion and would live some background info on the stallion etc. I instantly got a lovely response with a pic of my filly 1 day old. She was the first foal from the stallion and he asked me to keep them up dated on her progress. I was nervous about contacting them but so glad I did. The worst that can happen is that they ignore you and the best is you get the info you want. Go for it!
 
I wrote to the address in my mare's passport and basically said something along the lines of 'sorry to bother you but I just got this mare' gave them a little info on how she was doing and asked if they were able to tell me a little more about her breeding.
They sent back a lovely letter with details on her, how she came into being (daddy jumped the fence) and sent some really nice foal photos
 
Most breeders like to know how their horses are doing and many will respond to you should you find their email address. I love to get updates on horses I've bred/raised and I'm more than happy to send any new owners (after the ones I sold the horse to) foal pictures and tell them stories about their horses when they were foals. Luckily I'm in touch with all of the owners of any who have passed through my fingers but there may be a day when I lose touch with where one of them is so I hope that if that ever happens the new owner will contact me. I also do the same when I buy horses, one of the first things I do is to contact the breeder to let them know where the horse is. I've never been disappointed and they've all emailed/phoned me very quickly after I've contacted them. Most respected breeders DO know all of their stock btw so go ahead and let us know how you get on :)
 
I wrote to Minnie's breeder whom I got no reply from and I wrote to goose's breeder and they wrote back to me to see how he was doing etc and even sent me some of his stuff from his racing days and photos of him out racing (not very successfully I might add). I am glad I did it as I have photos of him as a baby and other sentimental things. I would definitely go for it as you have nothing to loose. :)
 
Yes I would definitely do it! I wrote to 3 breeders of horses I had/have and with all 3 I got a positive response and baby photos!! Hope you manage to get the same x
 
Yes do! I contacted the people in America who had owned my youngster's sire and dam, and they were really pleased and told me lots about his sire's temperament etc. :)
 
Brilliant, some really inspiring replies, thank you :) I've just dug out his passport and either my google-foo is lacking or there's (likely!) several thousand Pat Clearys in Tipperary :D Anyone more specifically familiar with the name?! Not to worry if not, there's a close-enough address so I can still write if I can't email.
 
4 of ours were bred by OHs family. One we are in touch with breeder and must contact again soon as promised to keep updated. The other we will never find. Was bought years ago as an older mare and passported by OH family with no known history at all. She's ironically the one I'd love another of so breeder would be nice to have known.

OH is in touch with lots of people his family have sold horses to as his mum used to match people to a horse so took the time to make a good partnership and wouldnt sell if not happy, most are still in touch very grateful to her for it and have ridden a couple of them.
 
Inspired by an earlier discussion, last week I emailed the breeder of my
boy, in Ireland. I kept it polite and quite short, but said how well he was doing
and sent a couple of photos. I used an email address I found through the
Irish connie breeders' society. Within 24 hours I had a lovely reply from the
man's wife, saying how delighted they were for news of him and what a
beautiful foal he had been. She said they always loved to know how their
horses got on after leaving them. It has given me a smile on my face all week
so - go for it!
