never work...

As we all know, as from july 1st 2009, all Equines that had previously not had a passport, were required to have one by law and also be micro-chipped.....

then Why the Feck are people STILL buying ponies from total ASSWIPES without passports?

"because i felt sorry for it" is the usual, tired reply.....

i'm sorry, but that is NO excuse whatsoever...it just doesnt wear anymore..
YOU the buyer, are just as guilty of the continuous supply of such animals...

please, please, please....ignore ANY spiel from these idiots..if they say its going for meat, do not believe them..if they say they have just saved it from meat, do not believe them..

if we, as a collective, stick to what we believe in, that ALL animals nedd to have a passport/and or/a microchip then the "pikeys" will soon be out of business.

NO PASSPORT/CHIP.....NO PURCHASE....

THANK YOU.

the reason for this rant is i was asked to help someone this evening who has bitten off far more than they can chew......

Wont help with auction houses ignoring the law either.
I bought two mares with foals at foot. Mares had passports, foalies didnt, merely the covering cert.
Registering them was a flaming nightmare as A) I didnt breed them and B) as I didnt breed them they couldnt go under my prefix, but nor could they go under the breeders prefix as he no longer owned them.
Legally the auctioneers should not have sold the foals without passports but did so anyways.
If I had of had any sense I would have refused to take them, but I had paid for them by that point, so figured I would passport them myself

foals dont need passports until 6 months..only derogations certs..which puts the onus on the buyer to get a passport/microchip within 30 days of purchace..post july 1st

copied and pasted from WPCS
FOALS
DEFRA have agreed that foals must be issued with a Passport before 31st December in the year of birth or within six months of being born, whichever comes later. Foals at foot can accompany their dams to the stallion without a Passport and for showing purposes. For selling purposes, all foals must be in possession of a Passport – there is no alternative to this – all foals sold, whether they are foals at foot or weaned MUST BE in possession of a Passport to enter any Sale.

Its late, I'm confused.
WPCS when phoned, stated I should not have been able to buy the foals at foot or otherwise without the relevent passport relating to them.
This conversation was had back in April when I applied to register them.
So whats correct? They can be sold without a passport under 6 months of age or they cant?

I was well aware of the passport thing, but not about the chipping??
My lad is passported freezemarked and microchipped, but wasnt aware that when the passport thing came into force they also had to be chipped by law??
I know alot of people that have passports but horses not chipped??

any Equine that was passported BEFORE 1st July 2009 needs just that...anything AFTER 1st July 2009 needs Passport AND Chip..

hence my post...girl bought 3 skinny cob types ..think Amersham!!..from a pikey..sorry..traveller..no passport, no chips NOTHING!!!

the point i'm trying to make is this..if people didnt buy these ponies, then the system would work because the traveller types would have to passport/chip their animals...

i think that anyone who buys an animal that requires passporting/chipping after 1st july and hasnt the relevant paperwork should be fined..say £500..that would make a few people think twice about buying in the first place....

To be honest I think chipping is the only thing that will make sense ofthe passport regulations. Thinking of having mine done anyway. He already has his pasport.

I agree if everyone stuck to the rules it would make it a lot harder for people to pass on stolen animals and the like but (and bearing in mind I know nothing really about auctions) isn't it truethat people can obtain a passport at an auction house prior to selling the horse?

Therefore surely that is a huge loophole as means anyone could take any horse and get it passported before it is sold in the ring? Or does this change completely now as the horse would have to be microchipped as well if a new passport was being applied for? I apologise if that is not the case at sales rings but that was the understanding i had.

I have to say i remain a tad confused with regards to this! Mind you I have to say I would never now buy a horse without a passport and if we all worked on this basis it would make the passport system work a little better.

oh right I see, sorry I my fault for not reading it correctly, thought I was breaking the law then *phew* still ideally he should be chipped so I'll sort that out when he has his next HRT jab.

it shouldnt happen.....

and here is where Joe Public needs to get a grip of things when they go to an auction...

ask if it has a passport and from what date..before 1st july, no chip, after 1st July, chip, or relevent paperwork for new owner to get a chip within 30 days of purchase...

we, the general public, wouldn't buy a car for 1200 quid without a V5...so why on earth buy a horse without paperwork.

CHECK and check again......

If an animal is advertised as having a chip, check with the office at the auction that the passport is correct...then ask it to be scanned to see if it matches..if the scanner isnt there DONT buy the horse....

Decent auctions/Sales WILL have a scanner...people must stop attending low-end markets and buying up the animals that are unlikely to have passports/chips

Ah thanks - i did think it seemed ludicrous that a passport could just be obtained for a horse upon arrival at an auction.

Hopefully with the new regs it will tighten things up but it's down the the buyer really isn't it to be on the ball I guess.

Friend bought a pony from auction about a month ago. He was in a pen with his half sister, both being sold by same breeder. It ws only when they got home that they realised auction office had given them the wrong passport, they had the mares. After several calls to the (disinterested) auctioneers they got a contact number for the buyer of the mare, and have arranged to meet up and swap passports at the next sale. Okay these animals had passports but just shows the offices really don't check them agaisnt horses as they should

Completely agree....no passport- no sale.

Few years ago bought a horse from less-than-well-respected-dealer....but horse was fine so thats ok....saw the passport etc when I went to try him but she 'forgot' to bring the passport when she delivered him (offence in itself?).......so I made her drive back to the yard with me following so I could get it and check it against the horse. Don't think she was too impressed.......

i had looked at a couple of broodmares, turns out they didnt have any paperwork and the seller wanted me to sort out the passports, chipping etc.
Needless to say - i havent got them, but instead went a bought another who was passported, for a smaller price who really needed a good home
smile.gif

The stupid sellers of the others though, they just couldnt get it into their heads that if they are selling them - they should be selling them within the law!

Will contact local Auctioneers before next horse sale to make sure they are aware of new legislation
Intend to ask to check all passports at next sale with particular reference to date on passport and hope Trading Standards will be available on the day.
