J came in yesterday like he had done Badminton. Sweating buckets (he did have a 0g rug on as it was miserable) and blowing like I have never seen a horse blow (you can tell I don't have fit horses!).

I took his rug off, put a cooler on him but even after the 5 min walk to his stable he was still blowing and I walked him around the block so he could catch his breath and cool off a bit before giving him some hay.

Is that right? I got some disapproving looks from people on the yard.

He's panicked himself. He may have seen your car and anticipated coming in, then wound up another with his antics which then wound him up even more. Horses are sometimes idiots.

No sorry... I mean, did I do the right think by putting a cooler on and walking him around.... probably sounds silly but I got some disapproving looks.

He wouldn't have seen my car due to how far away the road was. I'm not too worried about why he was like it (if he tried to chase his 2 field mates, or they chased him, he is unfit in comparison so that's why he was so blowy and sweaty).

Didn't make it clear in my post will edit now :)

I would have taken off his rug, sponged him down then put a cooler on. If he was still antsy, I would have walked him. Why would anybody give you disapproving looks?

Probably because they blame him for doing it, maybe because they think I'm soft. Who knows! I had my OH and friend with her little dog in tow (she has a horse at the yard) maybe they just thought we were weird!

Were you and your followers getting in others' way? Your environment doesn't sound particularly welcoming.

I have been on yards where the disapproving looks would have been about taking a horse out on the roads while he was still on a bit of an adrenaline high / not wearing hi vis / in just a headcollar / without hat and gloves etc. Of course none of that may apply, but could anything like that explain it? All depends on how busy the roads are, what facilities are available on the yard etc., for example is there a horse walker they thought you should have put him on, or a school they think you should have been walking him around instead? Do you greatly care?

Your horse came in sweaty and blowing so you quite rightly walked him off and made him comfortable before putting him away. As long as you weren't endangering or inconveniencing anyone else or their animals, I don't see what business it is of theirs tbh.

Thanks MP but he was dead on his feet but there we go.

Same issue today but worse so I need to have a chat with other liveries to organise bring in better as he is just stressing when others are coming in.

I need my own field somewhere ?
