Would you stay at a yard that's cheap, falling apart, nice friends, no wash facilities to wash muddy legs or new expensive boots without getting shouted at. You pay livery but get roped into doing jobs on the yard which has nothing to with you or your horse. Your horse is quite happy there and gets on well with horses.
Or
A 5* bhs yard all concrete no mud. Washing facilities indoor arena more expensive but little closer. Staff to do yard jobs. Fields kept on top of. Experiences instructor at hand. You name it good rep.
My horse is only a two yr old so would not need all this yet but it sickens me that I feel if I don't help I get shouted at at my current yard and I don't mind helping but sometimes I'm busy. Also the other day I found the yard owner had spat (big enough to make me sick) in front of my stable without cleaning it up. Rats everywhere and nothing getting done and to top it of mud Upton my knees at I almost get stuck getting my horse in and I can't wash his legs or when I wash my boots I get shouted at. All because the drains are blocked and have been the last two years. If I don't shut arena gate a second after pulling horse out shouted at and others get away worth murder down there. Another thing is the muck trailer is only emptied once aweek and when its over flowing and falls down he shouts that we did it and left are muck lying there and didnt clean it up but it had needed emtpying two days before hand. Maybe I'm having a bad spell as its this weather but I think I should be able to enjoy my horse without being stressed. The money trouble worries me if I went somewhere like the second yard but it maybe worth it in the end. By cutting back on things. I would be waiting till after summer because if things don't change at my current yard I don't think I will be there next winter. Sorry for the big rant hope it hadn't bored you

No way would I stay on your current yard! Are there any other options that are cheaper than the BHS yard maybe until your horse is old enough to start working?

The yard I'm at now is twice the cost of my previous two yards, but I could not be happier :) Go and see this new yard, and a couple more close to you, and go by your gut feeling.

In the meantime have a chat with your current YO and explain what you've told us. Sometimes you do have bad weeks on an otherwise happy yard, but to get shouted at....I am afraid I'd walk.

Honestly, the relief at being on a yard where both myself and my horse feel safe, happy and wanted is worth paying for.

EDIT - in fact the first yard we were on, hubs and i found a horse unable to walk cos of a severe abcess - had to help with getting the poor thing 1/2 mile in through thick snow and get the vet etc. In the dark. The next day, Christmas, the YO came out and screamed at us all because a gate in the now empty field was still open. The fact that he hadn't noticed this horse had probably not moved for 36 hours ish escaped him, we had gone out of our way to help someone else and their horse, no thanks (at all) - my god did we get out of there. Lesson learned - get on a good yard where horses are safe and you are happy. Don't get involved with helping other liveries. Sad but true.

If you can afford it then move, you are obviously not happy. BUT what about the important things, what's the TO like? Enough grazing? How does the place suit the horse? And would the new place suit the horse just as much but suit you better, if so then I'd say you're onto a winner!

I wouldn't want to HAVE to spend my time doing yard stuff that I wasn't responsible for especially if I wasn't happy there. I would be very happy to help where I am now though as it isn't expected and I am very happy there so will help as much as I am asked (as yet not at all but we muck in with bringing in etc). This Summer I will look forward to cutting and baling on the land and then moving 700 bales in return for a BBQ and I can't wait to be part of it. If I was unhappy I shouldn't think I would want to do it at all :D

No way I'd stay there! But maybe with a 2yo the facilities might not be needed but look at the yard and others in the area and go with the one you feel suits you and your neddie.

Really it would come down more to whether turnout was unrestricted & in a decent state, & the actual stable if horse stays in at night. Everything else is secondary. In your shoes, the second only if there is unrestricted turnout, or at least 10hrs per day, with a group with other youngstock & a sensible older horse. If not, I'd be looking for a third option that did offer that.

Billie, I agree with you - no problem helping out the YO where I am now, but still too wary to help other liveries directly. I'm too soft, and it narks me when you don't get even a thank you back. *sigh*.

At current yard turnout is ok. Not much grass in winter but the fences are another story all together never get fixed if knocked down. I would have to go tye tape up. He was with another youngster and they got on really well and was with two older horse who where quite but would play with him. And that's option number three they have all moved to a yard up the road for the same price and there is a stable there waiting for me if I ever want to go. There's nothing but it's all dry and there isn't much grazing but would give hay if needed and there all good doers (fat pony lol)there's only my field on the block but she says yard owner never bothers her. But it is full or rubbish here and there but not where my horse would be. Every time I think of going down I feel stressed and try to avoid current yo as much as possible the only time he is happy Is when he gets paid. If I moved to my friends yard and then to a bigger yard when he needs work it would make sense but I wouldn't like to be a yard hopper and waste people's time lol

I've just left a yard that sounds like the twin of yours and I can't tell you the relief I am feeling.

New yard is a joy and horse is far happier because I am. Friends have moved with me!

Ps what jobs does yo ask you to do?

Turn out and bring in his 7 horses, feed two of his horses in the feild. fill hay nets, put hay in feild, push bales ( this is not a problem, its when no one else on the yard will help and its always me and one other livery.) cant put horse out untill after 9 as stallion out fair enough but i wouldnt have this else where. cant use arena if his horse is t/o or being ridden in it me as a customer would have to wait even if im schooling someone horse would have to hurry and come out. he would ask me to ride his horse before someone else come to try it. i could be paid doing some of these jobs i used to be a groom and now im a mug lol its not all the time but to me this is the yard owner jobs also with fixing fences and making sure liveries horse are in the safest possible conditions. im paying him weekley livery to do jobs he is a buisness man so should no how it works. i do my bit as in the summer i wash and paint my stable i pay for it all ect we painted all the jumps on the yard too.

OMG Move! Even if its not to the 5* place. There will be somewhere better than this! Its normal to have a few niggles with any yard but this place sounds awful. You and your horse can be far happier. Good Luck.

You are being taken the pee out of  So is he going to cough up injury money if something happens while you are doing his yard jobs ? NO - no way !! Do you get a reduced rate ? NO !!!

You must get out of there asap.

wow he is getting free labour. Does he charge YOU when he turns out YOUR horse? yes business man thru and thru *rolls eyes*. I would not be touching any of his horses what if you got hurt??? no no and no! move!

He wouldn't charge to put my horse out but it would be a one of thing. but I never ask as I'm always there to turn my horse out . I also have other livery relying on me who work full time but they all forget I work too lol. Yep free labour but I will sharp be hated if I just turn around and say do it all your selfs. I've tried every trick to get out of the jobs like I'm working late or I need a break from being here all the time or I can't get there till partner brings me. But they just say there horses can wait. I'm going to have to do some serious thinking for the best

i wouldn't still be there if i was treated like that!! Not only is it not enjoyable for you but it can't be a nice atmosphere for your youngster, I would move him to the yard where the others have gone.

Move! :D

I've just moved from somewhere a bit like your yard at moment and although there are compromises where we have moved to eg. Distance (further away), outdoor no indoor now but I couldn't be happier. Everything is maintained and looked after. YO is amazing and really helpful/knowledgable. In a way wish I'd done it years ago!!!! The other thing is Bids is so much happier, partially because I'm happier!!!! Go for it, u'll be surprised how much better u feel xx

Definitely move.

Most of us don't mind helping out but we don't actually have to.
You should not feel pressured into it.

Even for a 2year old the facilities will help with the ground work.
