Had a horse vetted today, trotted up fine, slight positive on a hind flexion but trot away fine. Then 2/10 lame on the same hind on the lunge (in the arena) and 1/10 on the other rein. Vetting stopped there as a fail. This horse passed the vetting a couple of weeks ago with the same vet (vet told me himself). What would you do, revet I’m a couple of weeks or not?

Why was he vetted 2 weeks previously? I would be suspicious that it might have been done by the seller while the horse was buted up, in the hope that a buyer would take the recent vetting as good enough and not re-vet.

If I really liked the horse and there is a reasonable explanation for the first vetting, I would possibly get the flexion and lunge redone by another vet.

Was the vet you were using completely independent of the seller? Can you ask the previous vetter why they didn't buy?

If you like the horse a loan and revet in a month is a good option, depending on the contract terms. It can get very awkward if the horse is hurt while on loan.

I don’t know the previous vetter, not sure the vet would give me their info due to gdpr. Yes loaning could be awkward but fair if I use my vet

What age is the horse and what work was it doing prior to the first vetting? Was the workload/management changed inbetween or can the seller explain why it would be not passing in a mere two weeks?

7 Yrs old. Had been living out and then in for the past 3 nights. Same workload. Seller genuinely surprised no reason to believe otherwise as horse always been sound

I think I'd want the seller to investigate before re-vetting. Otherwise, if it's an intermittent issue, you might get an apparently sound horse next time, but with an issue still bubbling away. Not saying the seller is not genuine at all, but my experience is that a lot of people will not feel or not notice a 1 or 2/10 lameness.

Hmm difficult one dep how much you like the horse, how confident you are in its history and the seller, whether it’s doing the work you want it to now, and your view on risks/insurance.

I had one which had a head nod on the trot up but ok on everything else, I had the horse re shod as it was long overdue (bit odd really for the seller to sell a horse which needed shoeing but lesson learned for me). The horse passed when represented but I got an insurance exclusion on the leg (annoying). However, everything else was right for me so I went with it.

When I rang up to get my new horse vetted I was asked by three different vets (who the seller had recommended but weren't her own) what my name was in case there was a conflict of interest.

Did they not ask you the same question when you rang to book a vetting?

If I had been told on any of my horses vettings there was an issue I wouldn't have contemplated buying any of them.

Exactly could you see the lameness. Were you at the vetting? Did you get a video?

Was your vetting after the horse was stabled for 3 nights after having lived out? Was the horse literally walked out the stable for the vetting?

Im wondering if thats the cause, slight (fetlock possibly, tendon..) inflammation from suddenly being brought in to stable standing for hours in 1 spot whereas previously to 3 days ago was roaming 24/7, and had a clear vet 2 wks ago?

If that same vet vetted 2 wks ago clear, owner work not changed, the only change is stabling, which of course is drastic on their legs…if we were standing for 12 hrs in one spot we’d feel how stiff our legs and joints get.

I’d vet him after he’s been out a few hours, moving around.

Horses are supposed to be kept in before a vetting for this reason.

Walk away - the horse was lame. Never knowingly buy a problem.

How much do you like the horse? If you're desperate to have him then re-vet, but if you only like him I'd say walk away.
