Hi,

I'm looking for some opinions and advice!

I am having a knee op at the beginning of May which means I will be on crutches for 6 weeks - strengthening muscles for a further 6 weeks with the possibility of not riding for a further 6 months to a year.

The problems lies in that I have a filly who is turning 3 in May; I have hit a dead end in making a decision in what to do as I am going to be out of the equation for the whole Summer and ideally would like to further her education this year! ... Just interested to see what you would do?!

Just turn her away. Ideally pay/find someone to continue education in hand, & normal handling a few times a week, but tbh if she's good to handle & its kept up a few times a week, I'd leave the lunging, longlining, backing etc till next year. I'd normally wait till 4 anyway & they soon catch up.
 
can you send her away to be broken?

and have someone ride her for you until your better?

mines 3 later on in the year and i cannot wait to get breaking her in properly tbh!!

This. She's still young and I prefer 4 for giving them a chance to grow up a bit physically and mentally.
 
i say leave her, though with some handling every now and then, as it may benefit her if she started working when shes more developed, also it would be far better for your relationship together if you left her and did it yourself when it came to it.
a girl at our yard had a similar problem and she left hers till it was 4+ and that gelding is now one of the most amazing horses at our yard especially compared to the two who were broken a year before him and are the same age as the gelding. i know it depends on each horse but i really think you should wait till your better.

I am somewhat relieved in what you have said RE leaving her until next year but getting someone to continue ground work.

I was starting to panic as to what I was going to do however like previously said there's no point rushing!

Thanks - great point regarding our relationship ... Interesting to hear about the horse on your yard as well who was started later than the other 2.

The Knee Op is a light at the end of a 4 year tunnel so can't wait to be fixed and get the girly started!
