Afternoon,
Looking for some advice. I have torn my ACL and meniscus in my knee and looking like I wont be riding for the rest of the season as most likely will need surgery. Frustratingly I am also limited in my work as I cannot drive or walk. I have two horses in competition work one that I was hoping to jump BE novice this season and the other hoping to keep showjumping at 1m/1.10 level and is currently working at elementary level on the flat. I have currently dropped them both off with my trainer who has then for the next month while I work out a plan.
Horse one is a 17hh KWPN mare who I have owned for for 3 years over this time she has come on massively in terms of strength, ride-ability and training. She is the loveliest horse to work with (I often think how lucky I am to have a horse like her as never thought I'd be able to afford/run a horse like her). However she can get strong to ride/ sharp. She is currently ticking over with the staff at my trainers yard (trainer is a well known eventer however doesn't ride any more but teaches a range of riders from grassroots up to advanced and an event selector) at this yard they are beautifully cared for and stable management is brilliant. This is fine for the moment however I don't feel that the staff are able to continue her flatwork training which helps her move well and correctly. Im also nervous about them finding her a little too powerful, although she isn't very tricky I'm worried of the possibility of it going a bit tits up. I'm thinking of bringing her home and getting my usual rider to hack (he helps me 2x a week to hack while I'm at work and rides her very well and she likes him) and keep her ticking over and then get a pro to come 2x per week to school/jump her. This will be a cheaper option than leaving her where she is. Or I look at her going on training livery for a little bit. I'm not totally sure how I find this sort of yard? Im also not sure how to go about finding a good rider to come and school at home (I'd like someone with a record how can keep her going)?
Horse 2 is a 16.2 warmblood how is an ex advanced event horse who I am very lucky to have to teach me the ropes. He is very established on the flat and to jump. He is very happy at my trainers yard and the staff are very capable of hacking him, schooling and one will jump him occasionally. I do not own him I have spoken to the owner who is very lovely and happy for me to keep him so long as he is happy and kept in work. The owner and my trainer are good friends hence I was very lucky to have the ride and very appreciative of the opportunity. He is tricky on the ground will drag you if not in a bridle and jumps out of fields regularly whereas he is beautifully managed at the trainers yard. I'm very happy for him to stay at the yard until I'm back riding (I'm hoping by October with luck by September). However it is very expensive considering I'm limited working so my salary has near enough disappeared. A freind had said that to ease finances I say to the owner I cannot afford it she has him back. However I feel like I have grafted for a very long time ot be lucky enough to have a horse like him to learn on and he has been amazing for the last 2 seasons at allowing me to reach some riding goals I never thought I would (competitive BE, jumping at hickstead, riding a medium dressage test). I just feel annoyed, sad, frustrated to let it go knowing an opportunity like him does not come around very often if it will ever again?
I am very lucky to have a lovely set up at home with arena, indoor barn and turnout. I have bringing staff that work for me but are not there all day, they are experienced and happy handling the gelding (the mare is very easy to the ground). Ideally I need to reduce my costs due to limited income however do not want to the horses a dis -service. Feeling incredibly frustrated and upset by the situation especially as I had fun plans for the summer.
Any thoughts on options gratefully received! Also if anyone has any suggestions for pros for training of schooling in the south east gladly received too.
Sorry for long/ garbled message feeling a little overwhelmed
