Hi does any body know of any courses that i can hire..just to take a green novice horse around ? We are based just by Barton..so north or South of the M6 would be great...somerford is to far...was hoping for somewhere close to Preston..

Thanks xx

There is a yard just off the M56 which has a small course to hirse dont know if thats to far its just of the east lancs road by knowsley in liverpool

There is Whitegates over on the Fylde. Don't know a number for it but could find it out.
There is also a farm ride out Hesketh Bank way but I don't know if it has jumps - again, don't know a number for it.

Crow wood has gallops and a XC course.. also when it opens Craven(near Skipton) has XC and lots of hills which is good for fitness work..

Kelsall and Smallwood both a similar distance to Somerford.

There is one just opposite Bold Heath Equestrian Centre(advertises in Farmers Guardian). Never been but a livery there said he thought it was excellent.

TBH Somerfor is one of the best in the area and IMO well worth the drive

Claughton House Stables on May Lane, must be very close to you started hiring theirs out, but doubt they will be open for a while yet.

Crow Wood is definitely closest and has an all weather surface, but its definitely worth the trip to Somerford, we are going to do the Farm Ride (again!) which is 5 miles of all weather surface loads and loads of optional jumps. Couple of us going on sunday 22nd - does'nt work out too bad if you share the diesel.
And its much easier to get to than Kelsall, but Kelsall is great for babies, lots of small logs.

Is that the one at Out Rawcliffe next to the river?

Last time I did that one it was a bit overgrown, and the ground over there won't be fit for a while

There is an xc course at Hesketh bank, its really small and inviting, nice range of jumps too, its a good while since I've been, last no I had is 077709 56050 - piccies http://s16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/L154xxx/Hesketh%20Bank/

Pop staight off the M6 onto the M65 towards Burnley and its Junction 12 - you actually drive past the venue to the next junction (no exit that direction!) round the roundabout can come back down a junction and the venue is literall off the junction

You can see the gallops as you drive past. Will be about half an hour for you.

Crow Wood - I go quite a lot but only use the gallops -good for fitness work - I have started getting off on the junction before and its much quicker and dead easy ...

If whitegates is the one at Out Rawcliff, it is open but its not XC - there is the odd log ot two but you need to be careful.. Its a great place just to ride off road and its always OK omn the top of the bank alongside the river - though you may need to be careful as you ride down to it. Again good place for fitness and only a fiver... you just put the money in an envelope and post it into the box that is there

Hi there,
I also go to Crow Wood i took a 4yr old TBx for the first time and we had a great time and good ground for Ted. Also included in the hire is use of the gallops, Bargain. Oh just remembered good water feature too.
hope you have lots of fun.

i persoanlly don't think crow wood is that great...don't get me wrong its ok and the gallops are good but the jumps aren't that well constructed (i know i've broken two of them in the past!)- i didn't really think xc fences should break. i also find with babies that it can be a problem if you stuck at something like the steps or the water- there aren't really any alternatives wheras somerford has big-tiny versions of anything.

charity farm has an xc but don't think it will be open yet...i'd prefer this to crow wood for a baby personally, altho water a bit dingy
