Have contacted 2 different vets about X raying my girls hocks, one said they're happy to do it at my yard, the other ones won't.
Is it just the vets being funny, or is there a difference in the quality of x ray you get from a portable machine?
Don't have transport at the moment so it would be a lot easier for me to have it done at home but on the other hand I trust the vets that won't come out to do it more.

my vets have done both - does the other vets defiantely have a portable xray machine? Dont think the quality is any different whether they do it at the practise or at the yard.

From my experience xrays done on high power fixed machines in the hospital are much better than the portable jobbies although that was nearly 10 years ago now! It is worth asking if they can develop on the yard as if one doesn't come out and they have to take them back to the practice to develop them there may be another visit needed.

Really depends on the machine!
My vet has a powerful and portable digital machine.
You see the picture instantly, so you only take as many as you need and you can zoom in/out and change the focus.
It's more expensive than going to a practice but far far easier!

Had mine x rayed both at home and at vets. main reason for taking her there was that we were looking at multipule legs and not really sure where to start, so therefore not sure how many needed to be taken. have also had her done at home as she is a monster to load always goes in just takes sometime! and has been known to damage herself in the process. Never had any problems with x rays at yard other horses have been done at the yard (with various ailments) too without any problems. did have one vet from diff practice insiste to one poor owner that had to take there horse to them as the power supply would not be gd enough when i then pointed out other vets do not seem to have this problem he didn't seem to like that!!
i would think it that if you were looking at minute detail then going to the vetswould be better but if you just looking for somthing like spavin then it doesn't seem that qulaity is compramised by having them at home.
