So after 3 weeks of box rest, and clearing an abcess, Sian is still lame. Vet has been out today and he has to go in on Wednesday for X-rays, so trying to sort transport out.
Vet is worried it could be a fractured pedal bone - anyone have any experience of this?
Also, slightly off topic but does anyone know if you can claim transport costs from your insurance to cover transport to vets?

I have known a couple of pedal fractures, both healed well (obviously with rest!) and the horses came back to work.
Regarding the transport, some companies do, some don't others pay 50%. Best to check your policy or call the company for advise.

My anglo-arab fractured his pedal bone about 12 years ago (he's 21 now). It was a wing fracture that went straight through the bone & through the joint so it was a pretty bad one. He came back sound & is still sound now 12 years on. I did find that he didn't like landing after big spreads when we jumped which kind of put and end to his BSJA career, he also needs looking after on hard ground but other than that he has been absolutely fine. The best bit was getting straight back on to an hyperative horse after 3 months box rest!

We have a 17.2hhs eventer in at the moment with fractured pedal bone. He has done box rest and is now on controlled exercise prior to being ridden.

We are very careful that the exercise is controlled as "bouncing" wouldn't help the repair.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

My boy fractured his pedal bone and coffin joint as a 3 yo which was serious enough to warrant 9 months full box rest. After careful nutrition, veterinary support, x rays, shoesing, homeopathy, magnopulse therapy and physio he came sound. He had 3 intrajoint injections with hyaluronate. To date, at 10 yo, he has remained sound but he doesn't and do XC or SJ. However, we're having moderate success doing Dressage and showing and riding club clinics, camp etc. I'm too chicken to jump these days and won't risk him or his foot XC. We're teaching to do low key jumps but I'll always be guarded at how frequent or high he does them.

I'm sure your horse will come back to full soundness. The secret is allowing more time than is necessary to allow for full healing and then a steady fitness rehab programme.

Best wishes for your horse

My boy fractured the wing of his pedal bone a few years ago. He did it while having a hoolie in the field. He is fine now, although it was a long job. He is jumping and competing happily.

Gosh, I didn't realise it could be done so easily!

How long off work would this kind of fracture cause? Would you pedal bone then be weaker in that foot as a result?

This is what I like about this forum, you are constantly learning more and more...

My boy was off work for 8 months in total. 6 months yard rest then i chose to turn him away for two months. I figured we had already lost half a year so whats another couple of months. I think it depends on the vet as to how long it takes. My vet was quite cautious but id rather that than start working him too soon.
He is absolutely fine now and sometimes i forget he even did it. I dont make any allowances for it and he seems fine.(famous last words!!0

That is how one of my dressage horses fractured his pedal bone. We took him to Leahurst & they drilled a hole through the hoof wall & bolted across the fracture. the hole then was 'sealed' ( even had a bit of haylage tape on) 3 months box rest & a month later he qualified for the shearwater 4 yr old class at Hickstead. 6 weeks later he was 4th or 5th in the Final

I believe it is like all fractures, they are either mended or they are not. He never had a minutes problem with it & even passed a 5 stage vetting when I sold him on years later. (we did disclose ) I think he got to Advanced Med as an 8yr old. Gosh it seems like years ago.

One of the clients as the vets had turned there mare out in a rutty field on a frosty morning which resulted in 6 months box rest with a cast on for 3 months, unfortunately I think it was diagnosed too late and the horse never came sound

My friends horse did this about 2 years ago. 6 months box rest and 3 months slowly being brought back into work and he's now back in hard work on any ground - so there is hope!

Most insurance co's don't pay for transport to vets.

I managed a 15yo TB which fractured the 'wing' of his pedal bone in front of me in the field...spooking...
Although it was painful for him for the first couple of days, and he had to be box rested for a couple of months, then had egg bar shoes on (to stop movement within the foot compromising the repair), he came totally sound and had normal shoes on again.
