I had signatigraphy done on my horses back and it was £1000 and more accurate than an ex ray but it depends on what they are looking for as to how much they have to exray. what do they think they are looking for?
Well she's been having problems cantering she's relunctent to go forwards in canter, puts in the odd buck, backs off my leg and goes back to trot- also she want let me get on.
I wondered if it was her ovaries as she comes into season badly and it does seem worse when coming into season.
But after talking to vet I'm paranoid about Kissing Spines and wondering whether because she's got to go to vets for ovaries check anyway to get her back x-rayed!
So think they'd just be looking for KS so would just need a normal x-ray! Did insurance pay the 1000pounds?
I would suggest getting a quote from your vets. What are they looking for?
I had a mare x-rayed and scanned in February for a suspect kissing spine and it cost around £400. This included the injections, scanning the back and 5 x-rays, mostly along the back but one on the fetlock too. The x-rays were only around £40 each but by time you add on the vets time and injections etc it can really begin to add up.
Dixie- how many x-rays does it take for confirmation? If you don't mind me asking, did yours have it? What were the symptoms?
Thanks for both your replies!!
Yes she had it. I only bought her in December and by 20 Feb she was diagnosed with KS. The only signs from riding was in the last week she had began to buck (only one riding session). However she had a long lay off and I think the pain didn't kick in until I started riding her regularly.
Other symptons on looking back were difficulty in getting on, she always ran backwards, difficulty putting the saddle on, swishing her tail whilst working. Once she had been diagnosed she also became extremely weird in the field, constantly jumping out & galloping around looking very stressed. She was very happy left in the stable. I thought maybe she didn't like putting her head down to eat.
I think 1 x-ray would have confirmed it but I expect they need to take a few to make sure the whole back is covered and how extreme it is.
My insurance company paid the fees and now LOU. The argument being it was much cheaper for them to settle LOU than to pay for operations etc. She is now sold as a broodmare - all within 5 months !
On the bright side my friend has had a horse for many years, a fab eventer. The only sign of KS was that he was bucking when asked for canter. he has had injections and loads of pessoa work and so far the outcome is looking bright and she is looking to start competing on him again soon.
thanks Ruth123 for this post, my horse is going into Rossdales in Newmarket a week today for xrays etc. not sure if they are just looking for ks but i know if there is something there they will find it. Funnily mine hasn't bucked but has reared and always dis-unites in canter and recently has totally lost it, always running off on leadrope, wont be caught and so on. I cannot believe it is a change in character after 8 months so it must be something deaper!! Good luck with your mare and thank you for everyone who has replied to this post as it has also helped me!!
Im suddenly seeing alot about kissing spines - my own horse is being x-rayed on Friday, hopefully to rule it ou but to be honest im not that lucky!
Classic symptoms - disunited in canter, violent bucking, cold backed when mounting followed by explosive bucks, reluctant to go forwards etc etc. Now he has severe muscle spasms, bute has no effect (apparently it wouldnt in cases like this) and hes off for x-rays and injections.
Thankfully im insured with E&L (are they good at paying out?) but fingers crossed for no KS, although the vet said many horses with KS show no symptoms ( also see H & H mag this week)
I hope everything works out for your horse and equally for my own!
