Hi everyone, I’m currently downsizing from a Ford thunder to something which is good for the school run/town driving but that could also tow my 550-600kg horse in my 505 Ivor Williams trailer once a month.

I would never be taking more than one horse and am aware the x trail I am looking at has a capacity of 2000kg. It’s a 2016, 1.6 4x4 version. I know it would never be any where near rivalling my Thunder but I obviously want the towing vehicle to be suitable and of course totally safe and legal. Does anyone else tow with an x trail?

I have looked at other makes and models but i prefer the x trail.

Thanks in advance !!

I used to tow one horse with one and it was fine - mine was a 2l diesel. The 505 is 900 kg and with 600 kg horse you have 500 kg to spare so should be ok. They’re quite economical too. I wouldn’t tow two in it unless an emergency though .

Thank you! I would never tow more than one so that works out fine :-)

Thanks again!

My other half had an x-trail adventura that we sold last year. I towed with it a handful of times perfectly fine with my hb505 and single horse. I actually found it easier to hitch up and park that my disco however wouldn’t want to do long distances or two horses with it.

I have a 2010 model so the 2.2 l which tows 2.2 tonnes and i love it. I would only tow one horse but it is just perfect for what i need.

Had 2 friends who both had these and loved them for towing. Both were 2005 models and both towed a double trailer and 1 horse brilliantly.

we had a 2005 model for about 5 years and towed one large horse or two smaller ponies all over the place. good tow vehicle and fairly economical on fuel for a 4X4.

I used to tow with my X-Trail and has i had nothing to compare it with thought it was o.k but when it died I bought a Hyundai Santa Fe, and much prefer that, it feels much more capable. MPG around 38 on a usual day to day driving, road tax similar to that of an X-Trail.
