Simple question really, what type of boots should I be putting on my horse for xc? At the moment all I'm using is brushing and over reach boots but some people have told me he needs more protection and others have said this is fine.

It depends really on what you want (don't forget it's your horse!) and what you can afford. Also I suppose on how your horse jumps. Mine is a lazy clumsy oaf so she has Prolites on all round as they have the tendon and cannon guards plus protect from brushes, scrapes and knocks pretty much all round. I don't use over-reaches as she is too long and lazy to over-reach! On my nutty Welsh Cob pony I used to use brushing boots all round just for protection (she would rather have died than touched a XC jump so didn't need cannon guards etc.) but she had to have over-reaches on too as she once got a very nasty injury. If I was on a tighter budget than I was when I bought my Prolites I would probably have got either brushing boots all round, or those Sportabac brushing and tendon combined boots for in front and brushing behind. If your horse is short-coupled or jumps like a stag like my old Welshie used to, over-reach boots may be an option.
Of course it is all up to you though, it sounds like you're happy with what your horse has on already so I wouldn't change just for the sake of someone else!
ETS sorry that was a bit long and waffly!

I thought it was enough but now I don't know what to think! I'm now scared that he's going to get hurt 'cause I haven't put the right boots on - before him I had a pony who never touched a jump and all he ever wore was brushing boots, so I just put brushing boots on without thinking about it.

Until now I have used brushing boots all round and overreach boots for XC up to about 3'3'', but I have recently bought some N.E.W. XC boots (just fronts until I can afford hinds too) because my girl has skinny TB legs and I wanted something that offered more tendon protection. I do think they are worth the money if you can afford them, but at the end of the day it's your horse and it's up to you, if he doesn't really need them there's no point spending out on them.

Im a clarendon girl.

My tb has really fine legs and is a bit scatty and on the odd occasion has left a leg behind during take off while arguring with me.

I use the hunter boots all round. I did use brushing boots but during one xc round she clopped a fence while spooking at it and jumped awkward and took a big chunk out of the boot.

The clarendons seem really provective. I cant use boots with too much tendon support as my girl had a thickened tendon so have never tried that type.

Go with what works for you.

I think Sportabac combination tendon and brushing boots are the cheapest. Don't know how much though. My Prolites were £50 but you can find them for about £40 if you shop around.

I just got the Premier Equestrian competition boots, theyre longer behind and have a tendon guard on the fronts, £20 a pair because I cant afoord the eskies or NEW boots!
Why dont you see how you go in your brushing boots tho? Tape them up well and am sure will be fine? My last horse just wore WW boots as he was sane and careful
