Well I attended a XC clinic with Sam Champney Warrener at Coombelands yesterday. I am still smiling like made, it was fantastic.
Lottie started off very nappy and trying to get to her new friends. Sam had me riding her much more positively and if backing off from fence 6 strides out, back up your leg with the whip.
First field we jumped 3 down one side then jumped 3 other side of field, she jumped all though not reallt taking me into the fence as too busy trying to run left and get back with the others. We then moved on to another field again to jump 3 in a line, first and 2nd were ok but again not taking me, 3rd she freaked at and ran out ages before so back we went and jumped in, then we jumped all 3 again lovely.
Next was on to the bank you could step up about 1'6" and drop down about 2' which she flew and found lovely. Did again from canter and flew so then it was time to drop off the big bank. I asked her to trot down and she panicked trying to rear and run out, we just kept her there praised her when clamed down and kicked her off the edge she then lept in the air and did a huge buck. I somehow did not manage to move out the saddle whilst this happened.
After which I was told that I should be som uch more confident as I am clearly a good enough rider to stick to anything thrown at me which imporved confidence no end.
We cantered off the bank again. Then we had to jump a rail and ditch which she hesitated a bit but jumped, then on 2nd attempt she jumped better. Then we jumped 3 logs in a row which by then she got the hang on it and flew then. Then it was over a skinny which she wasn't going that forward over but jumped, so next time we approcahed it more confidently.
Then off to try double of ditches, I went to jump last ditch first and again she tried running out rearing etc, then we managed to jump it from stand still then in trot, then canter, then over both in canter so then we went back jumped a rail up 2 steps, down a bank, over double of ditches to tyres, She was lovely and forward flew the steps, ditches and then threw herself around and about 1 stride from tyres we gained control and she jumped them, then flew off. Next was trakehner, well mum didn't ride very positively so we stopped, 2nd attempt not quite forward enough but positive so she jumped it, 3rd attempt almost gallop and OMG she ballonned. Then off to the water we walked in, jumped out, trotted in jumped out, cantered in jumped out, then trotted in and out, then cantered in the out and then over a log pile.
It just showed the more positive I rode the better she jumped and I can't beleive it but she was so forward, verging on having braking issues. Sam said she wants to do it I just have to be more assertive and positive with her and keep her forward, I would totally recommend it.
Sorry for self indulgent post, but for those who know this mare it was such an achievement to come back alive and smiling
