I have a really problem with confidence with XC riding, actually anything that involves going faster then a trot in an open space. Basically my first xc when I was 8 ended in a bit of a diaster, the pony I was riding got spooked by something 'scary' in a hedge and took off up the field, he slammed the brakes on at the gate, and I fell off onto concrete. Ever since then, for the last 8 years, it makes me really nervous, I mean shaking, going white and feeling like I'm about to faint :( I really what to enjoy xc I really do, it looks so much fun, I have a private lesson where I ride coming up on a really sensible pony who I know won't do anything stupid, any tips on how to remain calm and actually enjoy it would be much appreciated!

Try a fun ride - a really quiet one - with jumps and a friend.
try xc pairs classes with a mate.
Try hunting (Yes this sounds bonkers - but its social, and fun and one jump at a time)
Try sports Psycology - there is a good blogger on the Horse and Country website = Charlie something - he has lots of visualisation exercises.

Good luck - and remember - its supposed to be fun!!! :)

I ride at a RS, but had the managers horse not nicked a tendon, I might have had the chance to go hunting, however I did want to wait because I have enough trouble cantering in a field on my own, I have no idea how I would cope with lots of other people as well!

Will definately look at the blog :) Does anyone know any books / dvds for xc confidence?
