If its just schooling then only really need the obvious (horse, yourself etc!) and a body protector, gloves and if you boot up your horse then perhaps boot up a little more substanially really.

For schooling all you really need is a back protector TBH, but I always go with long sleeves too & whatever boots you think your neddy needs....I use N.E.W. competition boots fronts when schooling at home & then fronts & hinds when we're out & about, but lots of people use other options - depends on what injury your horse is most likely to inflict on itself!

If you are having a lesson your instructor is likely to have all the angles covered - as a relative newbie to xcountry myself my biggest lesson learnt in the last few weeks has been finding my boy's natural 'cruising speed' and learning to go with him & trust him (which means riding quite differently to how you ride when you SJ!!)

But most of all have lots of fun, it's a huge rush - I have a worrying feeling I'm getting a bit hooked!

Ok thanks!! Hemir hasn't actually injured himself, yet

He normally has ProChoice tendon boots or brushing boots!! Would it be a good idea to put fetlock boots on? I don't think i will be able to ride in a long sleeved top - its HOT over here!!! I ride him differently out hacking and when 'popping' over the 1m ditches and the logs....he is quite the same just a little bit more forward going and doesn't like stopping!!!

i wud put the longer brushing boots on his back legs instead of fetlock boots, IMO just a bit more protection spec in case he catches himself further up the leg when moving at a faster pace (called a speedicut injury) .If it is a lesson then you will be being corrected etc as you go along so ride how you ride normally and have fun! Photos too!

I use NEW ones too as the XC boots have shatter proof protection on both fore and hind boots. Body protectors are a must but make sure if you are buying one that you get one properly fitted. I use Rodney powell Body protectors which are brilliant as they have many sizes and differnt fittings i dont realise i am wearing mine unlike others i have had which shot me out of teh saddle on drop fences not plesant!!!
hope you enjoy your lesson XC is an amazing buzz
