Hi there

I don't know if what I am asking is even possible but....I have ridden since the age of 6 and have done some low level competing in the past. I don't have my own horse (have loaned in the past) and currently ride my friends horses. I would really really like to train and take part in a XC course this year. Nothing too high level obviously. Is this possible without owning a horse? I know that sounds daft but is there a way you can pay to train and compete on someone's horse?

I am in Scotland and open to any help and advice!

Many thanks

I think you'd just need to ask around as there will be the odd person out there with a horse who they perhaps can't ride for a while (pregnancy, injury etc.) so they may be willing to let you ride and get it going XC and if you're extremely lucky they may also be willing to take you to events with the end result that obviously you're helping them out exercising their horse and keeping it going. You need to be a decent enough rider though that someone would be willing to trust you with their horse and if I were honest I wouldn't be prepared personally to let someone train my horse if they had no (or limited) XC experience. Can you ask your friends if you could take their horse round a course?

I don't know about competing, but there are certainly some riding schools about where you can go XC-schooling on a school-horse. Admittedly, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is just outside Aberystwyth, but I'm sure I've heard of others; so there might well be one not horrendously far away from you.

My friends are clydies so not really the xc type lol though she has got one popping over small jumps. I was thinking of getting my own horse but didn't think it would be this year however on speaking with my boyfriend we are considering doing it this year so will see how things go with that xx
