Hi

Just looking for some recommendations really - places to go this winter for fun/fitness/XC schooling/chill out time! - anywhere within a couple of hours of York.

Escrick Park, GG Centre, thornthorpe XC are the ones we always go too... Looking for some new ones, i have found cravendale ride which looks fab, has anyone been? Where else do you all go? Website links would be great!!

Thanks :)

Hi there,

Aside from the ones you have mentioned, there is Horses for Courses at stamford bridge, Manor Farm XC at Balkholme near Howden, Foxberry Chasers is a bit further but very good (havent been for a few years though). Pop onto the ukchasers website (google it) and they have a list of courses in yorkshire. Sounds like they would be perfect for you, bit of a nice ride out, some xc schooling etc.
Epworth Equestrian have hunter trials etc and think you can hire their place for schooling but don't hold me to that.
Years ago I went to somewhere near ellingstring to xc school and the lady had a marquee in the garden with loads of food from her garden party- stables for ponies and as much cake as we could eat...I do wonder if she's still up there...!!!:D

Craven Country Ride is really lovely (fab biscuits afterwards too!), really lovely course and always wonderfully maintained.

Bit further over but good for a day trip is somerford park for keen XC schooling but so worth the drive!

Try and get a forest pass from the forestry comission- entitles you to free off road riding in dalby forest etc; will try to find the link for you.

I can also confirm that Craven Ride is excellent. The ground is always the best it possibly can be as David, the owner moves the fences regularly and maintains the whole place brilliantly. Excellent parking, washing and tearoom facilities including an Aga you can use to cook your dinner whilst out riding. And agree, wonderful biscuits!

Ok, in addition to those there is Thornton Lodge (Uk Chasers Course) http://www.countrysports.thorntonlodgefarm.co.uk/equestrian-uk-chasers-course-29.shtml

I went many years ago for a competition but it looks like they hire it out as well and they have numerous fences and a decent water complex from what I recall.

We have also hired out Helen Bell's Course before too - that's quite nice. It doesn't say on the website the course is for hire but we did it a year or 2 ago.
