I am having real problems replacing my XC skull cap, most hats are too round ( as in I can fit 2 fingers up either side at the temple), & also too shallow. I have a high "crown" & find that most skull caps leave 2-3 fingers width exposed at the base of my skull at the back, which I think is too much for safety.

So, any suggestions for my shopping trip at Burghley!!!.

My current hat is a gatehouse, but the few I can find seem to have become rounder/shallower. I suppose a reasonable compromise would be a hat with a well padded harness at the back, but they seem to have becomer rarer too.

Gatehouse HS1 is deeper than most hats. Gatehouse also do a professional jockey skull which is cheaper than the HS1 but looks just as good and has a well padded nape, have a look on equestrian clearance.

Else try the Champion Ventair as they're oval shaped.

i have a similar shaped head. I found the Champion Ventair far too shallow but the Champion skull that they advertise more for jockeys fits me really well. I got Treehouse to fit mine at Badminton couple of yrs ago. They started by trying to sell me the Ventair but it really didn't fit so we ended up trying the jockey one which was much cheaper and it was so much better.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have tried the HS1 & find it too shallow in an ideal world,( tho' I agree others are definitely even shallower), & it has been the best so far.

Star...great tip about the Champion jockey one, I haven't tried that, so will look out for it.

I have the same problem, and my skull is a Champion jockey (Im sure), nothing fancy but fits and was relatively cheap if I remember right. Harry hall hats also fit me OK, don't know if they do a skull though.
