Had the saddler out to measure for a 2nd hand leather saddle. She reckons Katy will be an x wide and needs a slightly straighter cut due to her carthorse shoulders!! However, she doesn't have any in stock so I thought I'd ring round to see if anyone else did and every saddler I spoke laughed and reckoned I'd be lucky!!

Now Katy is about 14.3hh and according to the weightape is about 540kg, she's not a real heavyweight cob.

So my question is a) am I likely to find an xwide second hand or b) is a wide likely to fit, in your opinion from the pictures? Anty thoughts are very very welcome, I need a saddle before summer!!

Depends on whether or not is HAS to be leather? I have 2 XX-wide mares and found synthetics much easier to fit. I tried X-wide first (both leather - 1 second-hand, one new), but neither were wide enough. Looking at the pic, i doubt you'd get away with just a wide (i've found 'wides' to really not be very wide!)

I didnt have much trouble getting hold of leather x-wide, (from local saddlers) but like i said, they didnt fit anyway, so had to find xx-wide. I'm sure if you're willing to travel though, you'd find some! Good luck! I HATE saddle shopping!

We have a couple that may fit. Need more details eg height of rider/s, is pony fit (ie has she just come into work) & your budget.
PM me for more details if interested & I will try & post piccies if interested

Try fieldhouse saddles, a 14hh who is rather wide at my yard has one and they are brilliant. I also have one for pickle (17.1hh) who is extra wide (maybe extra wide) I have an 18.5inch one but they do them in lots of sizes

What about a Wintec Wide? It was the only one to fit my Welshie who is shaped just like yours (like a barrel with big shoulders etc.!). The Wide is VSD so does have straighter cut flaps than usual although I can still SJ / XC in mine fine. The gullet can be changed so you can make it super duper wide if you needed to etc. Plus it has CAIR so is very lightweight and comfy.

I hated the thought of synthetic saddles but loved this Wintec so much, I bought my other horses a dressage Wintec as well!

I've got an xw jeffries working hunter saddle it cost me £625 brand new from the saddler. had to have point straps put in to stop it slipping though.

My boy is pretty wide maxi cob/I.D type and I thought I would have problems finidng a new saddle after our other wasn't wide enough. I had an extra wide Albion k2 legend VSD fitted to him which suits him as like you I also needed something a bit straighter cut. It also has a hooped tree, or something like which is apparently good for the wider ones!?!?!
