I am such a proud mummy tonight.
As some of you may or may not know, I have an ex racer tb mare who at times can be a bit of a tit and we sometimes hit walls in our schooling.
She recently had a month or so off and one thing we have always had trouble with is getting her long low and on the bit and we have had sporadic bits of contact but never for over say 5 strides.
And guess what? Tonight we had a whole 30 min hack ON THE BIT!!! and I dont mean just little bits of contact but 100% on and for the whole hack... Even in trot!!! And then we went in the arena whilst another horse was being lunged in one of the other ones and she was still on the bit the whole time and such a star!!
Also when I was letting her streatch off she was asking for contact too..... I was beaming.
she got an extra big tea, lots of pats and some carrots :-)

sorry for this slighlty pointless post and I suppose it doesnt seem much to those of you who compete at high levels of dressage or the like but I am very very proud

Well, I'm impressed. Well done both of you, and I can understand entirely you being a very proud mummy! :D
 
Thanks and yes I am a very proud mummy.... It sort of makes me want to round all of those people up who bitched and said she should be shot/ various other things and say look at her now..... And then she proceeds to spin and chuck me off lol just for being abit cocky, rosie has a strange sense of humour!!
 
Oooh she sounds just like my mare who is still at the before stage! So I can imagine how good it must feel well done you, you have given me inspiration that we will get there x
 
Tilda. I am touched that you have said that, honestly I am. Im not sure about your mare but I know mine would just resist me and fight the whole way. You would try for contact and all she would do would throw her head up into orbit and not come down at all and just get frustrated. Something has just clicked and its all coming into place
 
Oh Tilly is the queen of evasion. It started off with school work in general, spinning, spooking everything you can think of (and its definitely not pain as she is quite happy to hack and has had every check imaginable!). Now I have a fab new instructor who has got us over that it then turned to working long and low and working in a contact.

Weirdly she is fab in canter not perfect but shows at least a few moments of perfection and walk we were starting to get there before she had a slight mishap in the field a couple of weeks ago and had a bit of time off and now we are back to square one. In trot the head just goes sky high and she charges off. I know she can do it as when I first bought her 2 years ago she was starting to really get it but now after a real stop start time of it, she just does not want to play ball. She is a very opinionated mare at the best of times and she certainly likes to make me work!

I am determined to crack it with her as I know she will get there so its really nice to hear from people who have been there and got through it.

I hope your girl continues to make you proud, well done!
 
That is EXACTLY how rosie was, a little connection in canter for a few strides, totally resistant in trot and a teeny bit in walk. What breed is yours? But im saying about our little success and tbh its only sprung up these past couple of days and im hoping she will carry on with it. But tbh and I may get slated but I havent used them in a while but if your mare has a slight ewe neck or too much muscle on the wrong side of her neck try lungeing with a bungee but loose, it helps give them something to learn a bit of contact from without is being distracting buggers flapping about talking along and having spaz moments (not suggesting you do but I think we all have daft hand moments) but if you use it once a week or something it really helps
 
I think they may have been separated at birth! Tilly does have a ewe neck so I will look into a bungee so thanks for that.

She is a TBx we think with new forest but just says cob on her passport. She is very TB though except for her flat back, no withers and resistance to the cold lol. Thanks for your advice x
