Yes I have a chocolate lab. I dont let him off the lead at the yard because he can be a bit silly. I don't like dogs running around generally because they poop everywhere and get under your feet. At my yard there are more jack russells than people. My guy doesn't get to jump up etc and I don't like other peoples dogs doing it to me.
At my yard we have, 3 staffords (mine), 1 flat coat, 2 working cockers, 1 Dalmatian, 2 collie crosses, 1 JRT x, 3 x JRT and I x lab. The lab is now 10, laid back old lady who no longer hacks out, neither does the older working cocker. My previous old Stafford, was still coming out aged 12. All varying ages, all integrated gradually, all get on fine though the arrival of the puppy working cocker can sometimes raise the energy level a little on the high side and then I will take away which ever one of mine is being the most boisterous. The Dalmatian puppy plays big time and for sanity's sake I draw the line at 5 dogs in full manic play! All dogs are off lead, but stick with their owners. I bung mine in the car if I am riding, though youngest comes out if hacking. We are all pretty good at poo picking as it is very much seen as a priveledge not a right to have the dogs out. My lot do view other liveries and staff as their friends so do hare off to find their special people when we get to the yard and then come back to me!
People at ours have got a JRT and two chiuahiuas (think i spelled that completely wrong... oh well) but I was thinking that in the future for me i'd like either a JRT or a lab. I have a collie at the mo but she'd not be good at the yard as she doesn't seem to like horses, she's totally terrified
Wellll...... we've got the two resident Security Operatives: one (bitch) is a Heinz 57 rescue, black & white, think she's about 10 y.o. but not sure. She's not a big dog (collie size) but has a really deep bark much more like a bigger dog in fact.
Second dog is a Lakeland X, 3 y.o. and full of beans! Both dogs make an awful lot of noise for just two!!
And then we've got the back-up security system; the Guinea Fowl! She somehow or other knows who's who coming into the yard. She doesn't make a noise if she knows the person, but if its someone strange then she'll kick up no end of a fuss!!! We've got three more little GF keets coming along nicely, so security in the yard should be OK when they've grown up and can make a noise too!
Old country folks (like my mother) will tell you that the very best "guard-dog" you can ever have in a yard is to put a gander there. They can be very nasty and threatening if someone comes into the yard they don't approve of!!!
My niece has a collie which doesn't like sheep but its ace at flyball etc. My lab is a bit silly but very loyal, though currently I have a broken ankle because of him. At the mo he's is a boot camp because he can pull hard on the lead when excited. I don't think I would have another choc lab. All my previous dogs have been danes and german shepards. I prefer big dogs.
At my yard the JR's tend to be allowed to run riot. I've no objection to fowlks having their dogs at yards but I've almost run the JR's down, slipped in their poop and fell over them. I think its common sense really. x
We have geese in our yard. The gander is a thoroughly nasty so and so if he doesn't know you.
MiJodsR2BlinkinTite do you have to shut your GF up at night or do the just roost? Do they make a noise at night or do they actually sleep during the hours of darkness?
