Yard idea for grass free livery.

When we were in Germany last year we saw several stable blocks that had an inside and an outside area (grass free, usually sand) for each horse - the outside had the option of being freely accessible. Why are we so far behind on this?
This hi tech system looks really fab, but unrealistic for all but the most committed to install, but there are SO many things many livery yards could do. Grass free turnout areas and barns, track systems, coralls...and yet most liveries have at best a starvation paddock.

It looks fabulous, but very expensive to install. Given that livery does not make much of a profit, except at the higher end of the scale, sadly I think it's pretty unrealistic to expect yard owners to shell out on massive modifications. Even a basic track system is financially unviable to most yards, unless owners are happy to have their horses wallowing in mud for most of the day.

I think unfortunately this kind of set up will be available only to the very well off.

At £100pm or so which is what many DIYers pay, that's all they will continue to have because it wouldnt be remotely possible economical for any DIY YO to do the facilities in many areas.

If most DIY owners could and would pay for those kinds of facilities, someone would build them, but as it is, it's a struggle to keep up existing fencing out of the monies paid.

Fencing is one of the biggest costs, so while I think it is a good idea for new yards it is likely to be restricted to the fancy pants and full livery end of the market, simply because if the nvestment required.

But there's nothing like this that I'm aware of that exists in the UK for the market who do have more disposable income and would spend it on their horse. And it could be a scaled down version of this (not have the microchip technology for instance) so start up costs wouldn't be as steep.

Yes the tag and chip feeding arrangements are out for most liveries.
I believe there are laws in countries such as Germany that give strict rules as to outside areas attached to stables and ability of horses to socialize etc. We don't have these in UK... yet! :D

is that in place of turnout (not including lami prones)??

i personally woul dlove a stable you could have an outside area too!... just to let them out in winter... and id be 100% with being in all winter as long as they can go mooch to their hearts content and never be stabled...

why are we so far behind with this??

id pay for it tbh!

Not for some in that high tech system. All the horses wear chips and can only get access to certain areas such as the field if their chip allows. You could just keep the field gates shut though in winter.
Mine are yarded in a rough and ready version of this for much of the time. I made a second yard in the rough area behind the barns that is linked to the yard so I can section them off, split them or let them have the whole lot to roam. I am so glad I did this as the grass here has proved very problematic.

With the increase in horses with metabolic issues I think demand will rise for better quality grass free areas and hopefully more horse friendly areas will rise with it. After all trashed, stressed grass isn't the best for sensitive horses.

yes sorry i meant minus chips - i should have been more clear.

the yard minus chips etc as really for us uk horse owners isnt necessary imo.... the whole setup for turnout is a brilliant idea :)

Wow that is like horses in the future! There'll be robotic arms dressing them in tin foil onesie type rugs next...

I don't think it would be that big an ask to have a large area of no grass around the yard for a leg stretch and wander. Lots of smaller yards are able to let the horses out into the yard with a round bale, that's the sort of thing I like. Not too practical with lots of horses on a yard though.
