I wasn't really sure what to call this thread - but I am looking for ideas.
My boss has very kindly offered to buy something for my horses as a thank you for working through a particularly crappy year (I'm not the only one he has offered it too, also a colleague (male) who has also experienced some pretty rubbish times). We're a small company and the two of us have been front line to some not so nice 'stuff' and at times a sounding board for the boss. So it's nice to have some acknowledgement of the effort put in.
He's suggested a couple of rugs but I have plenty and the boys are still growing so it would be a waste.
I'd like to go back to him with a couple of suggestions of things that would really make a difference to my set up. We have a budget of £200-£250.
My set up basic. 5 acres, split into 3 paddocks.
Fencing is all good now. And we have spare stuff to finish what we have left to do.
I have a large shelter and 2 smaller ones which I have rails to convert into temp stables as and when required. Battery lights in the shelters.
Water comes from collecting rain water and from a neighbour if/when required.
Feed room and tack room are shipping containers which have battery lights in. And any area in from of this for tying up etc which i call the 'yard' . I have rubber mats where the tie rings are and this works well for us.
We have a small area (30mx20m but plan to make it bigger in the summer) fenced off on the flat part of the field which we use for poorly ponies, storing chain harrow, hay deliveries etc, and I use it to ride/exercise ponies in in the summer and on weekends.
Hay is fed from a hay feeder in the field. We have 3 large bales delivered a month and roll them into the feeder as needed so no need for storage or worry of it getting wet and ruined.
Water is a metal bath in the big field near to the IBC we collect water in off the shelter roof. In the summer fields we struggle with the youngsters tipping over trugs and bins in the field and Reggie climbs in them and breaks them.
Lorry is parked on hardcore and we have hardcore in all the gateways where we need it. Next year I want to put hard core around the hay feeder. We have enough on site to do this already.
I currently have a 3yr old welsh C, 2yr old Welsh D and an 11yr old Welsh D companion pony. So most of my time with them is groundwork and learning about life.
The ideas I've come up with so far are a water trough for the summer paddocks (but I'm already keeping an eye out for another metal bath), a mounting block (have some small steps already) or portable battery powered flood lights for the yard area and the riding area. I'm leaning towards the lights as I don't see them in daylight this time of year.
Can anyone think of anything I could suggest which would improve my little world?
