Yard, Leeds/Bradford for 3yr Colt

Does anyone know of any yards that would take a 3yr old colt, private or otherwise? I know Raikes Hall have Friesan stallions on their yard but are there any other places? I'm based near the football ground at Elland Road with a horse currently near Tong but, although i've not asked, I don't think the yard owner would let a mature colt stay on the yard and also, the facilities there are not good.

I've kept a non-breeding stallion before (abroad) - typically europeans aren't that precious about whether their horses are kept entire or not so long as it behaves itself; its about the upbringing before anyone starts getting shirty about why it needs to be kept entire. It doesn't, but thats not what i'm asking.

I have this problem as I have I have a 18 months old colt who hasnt had his vaccinations so I cant geld him for 6 months. He's a rescue and I wanted to put him out to grazing however the yard I am at wont let him out because he's entire and they worry that he will try and cover the mares.

I am also in Bradford, I just wanted a piece of grazing that I could put him on, however I had no choice but to stable him :(
 
Yeah it's a nuisance. He's so laid back it seems a shame as I ultimately want to showjump him and his sire is a showjumper so he'd be pretty good. And to be honest, I don't really want to geld him anyway - having kept one abroad I don't see what the major issue is over here, it's not like i'd insist it turned out with mares!!! I had a rig that was far more a nuisance than the stallion I kept for a friend and mares are in a league of their own!! I'd never own a mare - they're far too temperamental for me!

Raikes Hall have stallions of their own on the yard so might have to go and beg James for a space there but they do have A LOT of horses there. And not sure but seem to think DIY is about £40 a week inc hay and straw?

I know of a couple of other small ayrds but its going to be a case of ask each one until all of Leeds/Bradford have been asked!

Let me know how you get on with homing your lad though :-)

Ok no help to you really as not in your area but I ended up renting some land and stables for my colt in the end.
He and my old gelding live there very happily. Is there anyway you could look into this? Maybe look to share with another colt owner?

It's looking like something i'll have to look into until i'm ready to break him in - i begrudge cutting him because other people think they're all mental and a hadnful and he's a sweetheart! If in a year he turns into an unhandleable monster then yes, i'll have him snipped!

I'm quite lucky as people are work have horses so when they're all back off sick and holiday, i'll be badgering them for ideas or a patch of field to rent as the case may now be! :-)
 
I agree. With the right handeling and management they are fine.

To be honest renting was the best thing I did. My boys live out 24/7 with free access to their stables with ad lib hay and deep straw beds.

= Two very happy and chilled horses! :)

If you find anywhere to rent thats a bit too much I would be happy to go halves for a share with my colt (I really want him out to grazing)
 
That sounds like a fab idea for you both!

I'd say I have space for extra colts with me but I'm way to far away.

Hope it works out for you both.

Ah, mrsjcmking where abouts are you based?. I may not have it in time for when I need it so may have to sell the colt on but the boyfriend has told me this weekend that he'll invest in some land (i.e. 10 to 15 acres) for me to keep horses. I don't live with him - havent managed to get the toothbrush over the threshold of huge new house yet but he'll buy me fields!! Haha! My kinda man!

I just have to find grazing/farmland for sale in the vicinity. . . Suggestions of how to obtain such a desire please :-)
 
I live in thornbury (leeds/bradford border) so anywhere on that side of the city!

and very lucky with the man!

My husband and I have been looking for grazing to buy (not had a huge amount of luck) but it depends on your price range really...(ours wasnt particularly high)
 
We are in a similar boat, we have 13 all together, 3 of which are colts. One was bought as a gelding but definitely isn't and the other 2 are show ponies that my daughter wanted to keep entire so that she could show them under saddle (section A's). She always said that she would have one of them done when she saw which was best when they matured. We had our own land when we bought them but are now on a livery yard following a huge change in our circumstances. They live out with our herd at the moment but we are going to have to have them cut in Autumn as the other livery is unhappy with there being colts near their mares (to be fair, there should be a field between them but one of the colts tends to escape a lot, he goes looking for 'personal' grass, he has only ended up next to theirs a couple of times but I can understand them being unhappy) They are going behind a powerful electric fence within the next week and depending how that goes we may keep the best entire but the other 2 will definitely be cut in Autumn,

You could try Tim O'Hara at Lantwood, Scotland Lane, Horsforth, he has stallions but not sure how much turnout they get and I don't think he will be cheap, but worth a try.
 
Hmmm. It does seem to be a significant issue.

I get that people wouldn't want their mares getting raped (!!) but I can't believe there isn't the facility for colts/stallions. Serious competition stallions have to behave themselves when they're out overnight etc at major competitions (i've recently been at the FEI European Pony Championships where there were around 20 pony stallions, all impeccably behaved), so whats everyones problem about them?!!

Thanks for all your suggestions though - i'll have to keep plugging away!
 
as a yard owner who doesnt take colts i think you'll find the major issue is not your colt, but other peoples actions that may put your horse/their horse/themselves at additional risk, and with the price of insurance for diy/part livery yards, its just not worth it for what you pay in diy livery!
you also need seperate turn out and policies in place eg risk assessments are different, etc etc.
i think you would find the situation different if you wanted full livery as the yard themselves have control over your horse.
and yes, SJ stallions are generally well behaved, but remember these horses have a pro on the end of a rope 100% of the time and are exceptionally well managed.
