Hi I have just bought a new stable and infront of where we are putting it is just mud. I have concrete hardstanding infront of my other stable( which is too small) but I can't afford more concrete, I just want a small area infront of the stable that when she steps out of her stable she isn't in mud :/ I don't know if anyone had tries it but was thinking bout concrete slabs. Then in winter putting old carpets down ontop so it's non slippery? I'm not too bothered about looks ATM just want something ready for winter. I can do looks next year lol, any ideas please help

We did a 12 foot by 12 foot area in paving slabs which we have laid on builders grit. (sand with some bits in). I am lucky in that my friend who shares my yard with me, her OH is a groundworker, so we got him to do this for us. Just dug out some earth, put the grit down, levelled it then laid slabs on top checking with spirit level that they were even. It was only done in March, but the weather has been so awful since, they've had a good trial I think. We walk on it all the time, there is always a large round bale of hay on a pallet on there (don't allow tractor on them though), and it is right by where we store the barrows and poo pickers. It has definitely been worth doing, I would like to extend it in both directions by a few slabs. I think we had to leave it alone for a week before we could walk on it.

We were even able to get the paving slabs for free from one of our field neighbours, who very kindly offered them to us.
