I’ve recently just had a teenage girl at my yard take the stirrups and girth off my saddle to use it on her own..didn’t ask or tell me
Only know cuz I found them attached to her saddle ?
Id have flipped my lid!
My stirrups alone were £200 ??

The youth of today certainly are not the same as when we were younger.
Its not just yards, it’s everywhere,

our trains are full of antisocial behaviour, setting fires, breaking glass, harassing other passengers. The police dont care and neither do their parents ??‍♀️

I think sometimes teens have trouble understanding boundaries (like borrowing tack, feed, supplements etc without asking) and general courtesy and safety on a yard, particularly if it's their first time on yard and they've come from a riding school environment- and their parents aren't horsey and don't understand either. However, without exception, most of the actually hurtful behaviour I've witnessed and experienced hasn't been from teens but women my own age.

Or is it that the adults of today are not what they were? I am pretty sure that the nature of children has not changed, but it does seem that the attitude of parents, and indeed other adults, towards correcting children has changed. I do not believe that as teenagers we were 'nicer people' than the teens of today, just that those around us had higher expectations of us and were not afraid to hold us to the expected standards of behavior.
From what I see and hear from the youth things have changed, I mean a 5 year old telling a grown up- take your f' ing shoes off my mums just swept that. Just one example of a child from a livery. I would never swear or have ever swear in front of my parents.

Things have changed in a lot of ways.

I am so glad I was brought up how i was and when I was, I would hate to grow up now, I really would.

Shocking I agree, but I suppose my question would be how did the adults present, mainly the parent, react? I see from my own children, who are all good at heart, that boundaries are essential, if they see a weakness they will push them. This may start with low level cheek, but if not nipped in the bud can escalate to the behavior described. To me this behavior is a failure of adults, not of children. We hold all of the cards when it comes to raising children, they live in our houses, eat the food we buy and cook, use devices and wifi supplied by us, and go to bed when we tell them to do so. My experience of teens is that if you take away wifi and devices it is a very good incentive for them to behave better to earn them back, and I do not wait for shockingly bad behavior to use this sanction, any low level disobedience in our house gets a warning, and then removal of wifi privileges is immediate if they do not correct their behavior. We should not forget that we are both in control, and responsible for the behavior of our children. Even if they have some job to earn money they need our permission, and we are able to control what any funds earned are used for.

I simply do not believe that there is now a generation of 'bad' children, or that they have failed, more that when we see bad behavior we should look to the generation of the parents, because it is them who have failed.

We had some vandalism locally and the culprits (teenage boys) were caught on CCTV. Posted a fairly blurry shot on FB with the owner of the damaged gate asking if they were local. Responses were split between horrified that this happened and "they're just bored children, not their fault". I'd normally avoid this kind of debate but waded in saying I was bored often as a teenager during the summer holidays but never resorted to vandalising property. Plus I could imagine my parents response if I had.....

So yes - I don't think I was a better teenager 30+ years ago, I just wasn't allowed to get away with much!

I grew up with the fear of being in trouble, if I had ever brought trouble to my parents door I dont think I woulda have been able to sit down for a week ? But apart from that, was taught thats just not how you behave ?

This is happening at the yard I am leaving this weekend, and these teenagers (young adults) are egged on by their mothers who get involved and are probably worse. It is disgusting behavior and I am leaving because of it.

I've encountered a few obnoxious teenagers over the years but generally, they're pretty easy to but in their boxes. It's an age thing, at 15/16 you think you know everything but they all realise eventually that life is difficult enough without adding to the problem.

Middle aged ladies... now they're the ones to avoid. My friend was at a super yard, indoor, outdoor, great hacking, smart stables but, 3 ladies made her life miserable by insisting she couldn't ride and therefore shouldn't ride. Absolutely ridiculous. She left eventually but not until she'd nearly had a mental breakdown. Horrible women.

I visited a friend at her old yard a couple of years ago. There was a teenage girl that put the kettle on for us that was then shouted at by her mum, effing and blinding that she shouldn't do it . I've never heard anything like it. This teen now has a baby, she is 16. She is following in mums footsteps. I'm mot sure the teens have changed much but the parents really don't seem to care.

Thats a shame your having to leave! Middle aged women were yard bullies at my last yard, the kids were all lovely! Usually all stirred up by one ring leader and when that cloud f!cked off, it became a beautiful day ?
Its a very expensive hobby to be dreading going to do. Thats what i think
