yard worming programme being ignored - also in vets

Im on diy and our yo tells us when we have to worm horses and what to use.
I know some people are ignoring this, doing their own egg counts and their own thing.
Noone poo picks, it just isnt done at my yard (which i dont agree with but with 10 plus horses in the herd i cant do it by mself)
So the question - is my horse put at risk by this? Should i follow other liveries egs and send my horses poo somewhere to get his needs analysed?
Or follow yos guidelines, as most do (apart from the few who dont)
Im so confused so any advice genuinely welcomed x

You should speak to your yard owner so that she can sort out this mess - even with worm counts, if other horses are not wormed/not wormed at the same time, your horse is unlikely to be free of worms. Your YO needs to make sure that everyone follows the same programme and that everyone poo picks, or people are worming their horses for nothing :)

If poo picking is not being done, then I think I would definitely go for worm counts. Any yard routine really ought to include worm counts to see if it's being effective anyway and to avoid unnecessary dosing.

Remember that you'll still need to routinely worm for tapeworm unless you use an ELISA test.

I have no vested interest in the company at all, but I personally use and am happy with Intelligent Worming. I pay a annual fee and they send me pots for poo collection for worm counts and appropriate wormers at the right time. It's a bit of a minefield getting it right on your own so I'm quite happy that someone else is in charge and telling me what to do when! Both my horses have different programmes as they have different needs/egg counts etc. I would never have treated them differently if I hadn't gone down this route, and one would have been being underdosed for her worm burden and the other overdosed for his zero count.........

ETA - and also put pressure on YO and everyone else to insist on poo picking.

what our yard owner does is give you the date they all need to be wormed and what with then you have to return the empty used worming tube to her with your horses name on it. that way we know they've all been done. might sound bit harsh but i would rather that than waste my wormer knowing that others haven't done it. plus its written in to our contract, if you choose to ignore it you will be told to leave.

i wish my yo did that - unfortunately they dont.
I think from these relies i need to get my horse worm counted - noone will poo pick at our yard, its just not done and im relativeley new at my yard and am quite shocked by this

The field should be poo picked anyway whatever the worming program. I dont know if you know about how pasture grows but unless you look after it properly the good grass will not grow under poo. Also there is the fly issue, its important to keep flys down and you can help this by keeping your field clean, and if you are worming you should if possible keep your horses in whilst you worm so you can then clean up the poo if any worms come out the next day after worming or at the very least clean up the field after a worming so the horses dont digest them again by accident. Its basic horse management that the other owners need to be aware of as obviously you are more responsible than them.

kaylum im a new novice owner on a yard that has had liveries for years - this is how they do it - they just dont poo pick!!
How can i force them - i cant - so need to look after my horsexxx

they are supposed to be wormed friday - change fields sunday - even me as a novice can see this isnt good - no comimg in, just worm friday and change fields sunday

I dont know what to suggest other than asking the YO about how they do pasture management.

I guess the must chain harrow it which is not the best practice for a pasture management.

My YO buys the wormers and hands them out when they are due wormed, then puts the cost of the wormer on our bill. Maybe you could suggest that to your YO?

It must be so frustrating when you are trying to do the right thing and YO doesn't clamp down on other liveries. There should be rules about things like worming or could you suggest separate paddocks and then at least you can do your own thing. I'm so glad I rent my own field and then I can manage things my own way.

Being at a proper place, our YO sends in poo sample to vets and worms for us accordingly, this means that it gets done as required, and they all get done at the same time, also means the animals arenn't having chemicals rammed down their throats every six weeks unecessarily, so many mickey mouse yards as far as I can see.

Apart form worming, it always seems some cant' follow the simplest of rules, keep the gate shut, oh I'm only going to be 5 minute goes the excuse, ragwort pulling and trough cleaning and filling, same old lazy gits every time not bothering, nation of Ar******s

oh dear it does seem my horse is on a mickey mouse yard from ur replies - ty all for ur honesty xxxx
